SeaWorld Stock Jumps After Rumors of Six Flags Bid

SeaWorld Stock Jumps After Rumors of Six Flags Bid

ORLANDO, Fla. — SeaWorld Entertainment stock jumped Wednesday after rumors circulated that Six Flags could be looking to buy some of the company’s parks.

  • Rumors circulate of Six Flags interest in SeaWorld
  • SeaWorld Entertainment stock jumped Wednesday
  • SeaWorld has been seeing uptick in revenue, attendance

Shares were up 3.77 percent by the time the New York Stock Exchange closed.

The rumor, which was first shared by blogger Themed Reality, states that Texas-based Six Flags is currently in talks to purchase “all or part” of SeaWorld’s assets. That could include SeaWorld Orlando, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay and parks in other states such as Texas.

Both Six Flags and SeaWorld operate parks in San Antonio.

When reached for comment, a SeaWorld spokesman said the company doesn’t comment on “speculation or rumors.”

The rumors come just days after SeaWorld reported strong third quarter earnings. The Orlando-based company posted increased attendance and revenue at its parks.

In recent years, SeaWorld has been working to recover from falling attendance, mostly due to bad publicity from the 2013 documentary Blackfish.

SeaWorld’s plan has been to increase the number of attractions at its parks, opening new ones every year. For 2019, the company is set to open a Sesame Street land in Orlando and a multi-launch coaster in Tampa.

SeaWorld has been the subject of a sale rumor in the past. Last year, Bloomberg News reported that UK-based Merlin Entertainment was looking to make a bid for SeaWorld. Merlin owns Legoland parks and Madame Tussauds.

Chef’s Kitchen: Bulla Gastrobar’s Pinxto and Tostada de Aquacate

WINTER PARK, Fla. — We’re craving traditional Spanish fare, so we hit up Bulla Gastrobar in Winter Park and asked them about one of their most rock star dishes.

“So pintxo (pronounced ‘peen-cho’) is a skewer,” said Executive Sous Chef Mariano Vegel. “It’s a Spanish word for skewer. We use chicken thigh because it has more flavor and more juice than the breast.”

The thighs are marinated in cilantro, “a lot of” paprika, garlic, olive oil, and a little salt.

The chicken is grilled and then popped in the oven. While it does its thing, Chef prepares the avocado toast. The bread is kind of like a ciabatta bread.

“We call it ethereal bread,” Chef told us. “It’s really light but super crispy. So we couldn’t find anything else here, so we needed to bring it from Spain.

The toast rests on a bed with everything from a mojo verde sauce, to a caper medley, even a yogurt schmear.

Let’s cook!

Pintxo & Tostada de Aguacate

Ingredients:

  • 2 marinated chicken skewers
  • Pan de cristal or any baguette, sliced
  • Mashed avocado with salt to taste
  • Marinated onions & capers
  • 1 oz of yogurt sauce (equal parts Greek yogurt and lemon juice, oil, and salt to taste).
  • 1 oz mojo verde (a cilantro, oil, and garlic based sauce)
  • 8 tomato slices

Directions:

  1. Place the chicken skewers on the grill until fully cooked. Bulla puts it in a josper oven for a more rustic flavor.
  2. Place the sliced bread in a convention oven for about 3 minutes, or until crisp and light brown.
  3. Spread the mashed avocado evenly on the slice of toasted bread.
  4. In a mixing bowl, add the marinated onions and capers with 8 tomato slices. Mix well so all tomatoes are well coated.
  5. Place the tomatoes in the center of a bowl and top with marinade.
  6. Crisscross the avo-toast over the tomatoes and top with the chicken skewers, leaning one on top of the other.
  7. Decorate the bowl with tomatoes, dots of yogurt sauce, and mojo verde.

Tapestries Lakeland Project showcase artists’ paintings on Lakeland buildings

LAKELAND, Fla. — Downtown Lakeland will now be a lot more colorful thanks to the Tapestries Lakeland Project.

  • Tapestries Lakeland Project showcase artists’ paintings across city
  • Gigantic paintings on canvas to appear on buildings

A collection of 65 gigantic paintings on canvas tarps will appear on buildings all over Lakeland starting on Monday.

Forty three artists participated, ranging from high school students to professionals. The project has been in the making for about a year.

“The diversity of the paintings, what they’re about, the age of the artist, there’s an 83-year-old woman, 19 and 16-year-old high school students,” artist David Collins said.

Collins is one of the people who came up with the idea.

“We’re in a city that has no murals. And you start looking at other communities and say, ‘Oh they have murals,’ and we’re not going to get there unless we start doing something. So this is a transition sort of thing showing that we have artists in Lakeland that are capable of producing great murals.”

Tattoo artist James Hicks painted a tarp which he says represents chivalry.

“I’m proud. I’m very proud to see our community is capable of this much solid creativity and professional craftsmanship. And that they can put it together and make a beautiful experience for the whole community,” Hicks said.

The paintings will appear on buildings in Lakeland’s downtown, Dixieland, and Midtown neighborhoods and remain there for a year.

SeaWorld Comeback: Company Reports Rising Attendance

ORLANDO, Fla. — SeaWorld Entertainment continues to bounce back from years of disappointing earnings, reporting gains in both attendance and revenue in the thrid quarter.

The Orlando-based company had a total of 8.3 million visitors at its 12 parks, an increase of 9.7 percent, during the busy summer season, according to an earnings report released Monday. Total revenue was up 10.4 percent to $483 million.

SeaWorld reported a net income of $96 million, up from $55 million in the same quarter last year.

For the first nine months of the year, SeaWorld also saw strong results. Visitation was up almost 9 percent, with 1.4. million people entering the parks. Revenue grew by 9.5 percent to $1.09 billion. In the same period last year, revenue was $997.8 million.

Interim CEO John Reilly attributed the company’s strong performance to new pricing strategies; positive reception of new rides, attractions, and events; and increased spending in the parks.

In previous years, SeaWorld has struggled with declines in attendance and revenue attributed to backlash following the release of the 2013 documentary “Blackfish.”

The company recently opened Infinity Falls, a family-friendly water raft ride, at its Orlando park.

SeaWorld is getting ready to begin its holiday festivities, adding more operating days at its year-round parks.

“We are excited about bringing our guests what we believe is the best holiday season entertainment value in the industry,” Reilly said in a statement.

Moving forward, the company plans to open new rides and attraction every year at its parks.

“We are looking forward to the many brand new thrilling experiences coming to our parks next year,” Reilly said.

SeaWorld Orlando will soon debut a Sesame Street-themed land in the spring, while Busch Gardens Tampa Bay will open Tigris, a multi-launch coaster.

Another way SeaWorld is working to turn things around is with its new season pass program. The program, which launched last month, features multiple tiers, with admission starting at $9.99 per month.

Disney Invites Fans to ‘Share Your Ears’ For Good Cause

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Walt Disney Company has once again launched its “Share Your Ears” campaign.

  • Disney launches “Share Your Ears” campaign
  • Fans invited to share photos of themselves wearing Mickey ears
  • Disney will donate $5 to Make-A-Wish for every photo shared

The promotion, which kicked off Sunday during Mickey’s 90th Spectacular, will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation, an organization that grants “wishes” for children diagnosed with critical illnesses.

“It its a tremendous honor to support children whose wish is to come to Disney,” said Bob Chapek, Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Consumer Products, in a statement. “Wish granting exempliefies the magic our 160,000 cast members and Imagineers create for guests all over the world every day.”

Fans are invited share a photo of themselves wearing a pair of Mickey Mouse ears on social media with the hashtag #ShareYourEars now through November 17. Disney will donate $5, up to $2 million, to Make-A-Wish for every photo of someone sporting a  pair of ears on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

And for fans visiting Disney parks during the campaign, there will be special photo walls in various locations.

At Disney World, photo opportunities will be near Tomorrowland’s Purple Wall at Magic Kingdom, at the Imagination Pavilion at Epcot, outside the entrance to Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and across from Tiffins at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. A photo wall will also be available outside the Cirque du Soleil theater at Disney Springs.

This is the third year Disney has held the “Share Your Ears” campaign.

More than 10,000 Disney “wishes” are granted each year.

‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ Rocks Box Office with $50M Debut

NEW YORK (AP) — The Freddie Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” and 20th Century Fox are — for now, at least — champions of the world.

  • “Bohemian Rhapsody” earned $50 million at the box office
  • Freddie Mercury exceeded expectations in opening weekend
  • The film also scored $72.5 million internationally

“Bohemian Rhapsody,” starring Rami Malek as the late Queen frontman, shrugged off production troubles and mediocre reviews to debut with $50 million in weekend ticket sales in U.S. and Canada, and another $72.5 million internationally, according to studio estimates Sunday. That was well beyond expectations, which had pegged the film closer to $35-40 million in its opening weekend.

But audiences rushed to theaters to see the widely praised performance by Malek, the “Mr. Robot” star, and to hear Queen’s foot-stomping anthems like “We are the Champions,” ″Another One Bites the Dust” and the operatic title song. The movie, which Bryan Singer directed before being replaced by Dexter Fletcher, at times has an almost concert-like feel, including a lengthy re-creation of the band’s 1985 Live Aid performance.

“It really is a celebration of Queen and their music, and I think we did a really good job of letting people know that that’s what this is,” said Chris Aronson, distribution chief for Fox.

In soaring to No. 1, the Fox release trounced one from Disney, which will soon own the studio. The Walt Disney Co.’s lavish, big-budget “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” despite a production budget of $125 million, opened with just $20 million. Disney is set to merge with Fox in the coming months.

“We were hoping for a stronger start, but we do think it’s a film that people will find as we head into the holidays,” said Cathleen Taff, head of theatrical distribution for Disney.

Though Disney’s record of success is the envy of Hollywood, “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” marks the studio’s third misfire this year following the underperforming “A Wrinkle in Time” and “Solo.” The studio’s CGI-stuffed resurrection of E.T.A. Hoffmann story was positioned as an early holiday season release, but flopped with critics (34 percent “fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes) and sparked only modest interest from audiences. It grossed $38.5 million overseas.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” was largely dismissed by critics as an overly conventional rock biopic (60 percent “fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes), but the film proved more popular with moviegoers, who gave the PG-13 release, produced by Graham King, an A CinemaScore and 4 1/2 stars out of five on Comscore’s PostTrak survey.

“Even in the negativity that came out of critics, there was always a ‘but,’ almost universally: ‘But Rami is great,’” noted Aronson. “I’m very happy for Graham and Rami and the entire filmmaking team. And I’m happy for the home team. This is a big win for Fox.”

Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Comscore, praised Fox’s rollout of the film as “pitch perfect.” Dergarabedian also cited Malek’s breakout big-screen performance and the sustained interest in all things musical at the box office. Musically based films have lately been major draws in theaters, from Fox’s own “The Greatest Showman” earlier in the year to Warner Bros.′ Oscar favorite “A Star Is Born,” which collected another $11.1 million in its fifth weekend for $165.6 million overall.

“It seems that audiences can’t get enough of movies that have music baked into their DNA,” Dergarabedian said. “That’s proving to be a very successful formula.”

Another winning formula — Tiffany Haddish plus anything — came up short over the weekend.

“Nobody’s Fool,” which paired Haddish with another box-office force in writer-director-producer Tyler Perry, opened in third with a so-so $14 million. While far from disastrous for a movie that cost $19 million to make, the muted performance of “Nobody’s Fool” seemed likely a result of oversaturation. Two films starring Haddish — “Night School” and “The Oath” — have opened in the past six weeks, and “Night School” is still No. 12 at the box office.

In limited release, Joel Edgerton’s acclaimed gay conversion therapy drama “Boy Erased,” starring Lucas Hedges, opened with a strong per-theater average of $44,000 in five theaters.

Matthew Heineman’s “A Private War,” starring Rosamund Pike as war correspondent Marie Colvin, opened in four theaters with a per-theater average of $18,000.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to comScore. Where available, the latest international numbers for Friday through Sunday also are included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. “Bohemian Rhapsody,” $50 million ($72.5 million international).

2. “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” $20 million ($38.5 million international).

3. “Nobody’s Fool,” $14 million.

4. “A Star Is Born,” $11.1 million.

5. “Halloween,” $11 million.

6. “Venom,” $7.9 million.

7. “Smallfoot,” $3.8 million.

8. “Goosebumps 2,” $3.7 million.

9. “Hunter Killer,” $3.5 million.

10. The Hate U Give,” $3.4 million.
