‘Arizona Sunshine’: Lose Touch With Reality in This VR Zombie Apocalypse

‘Arizona Sunshine’: Lose Touch With Reality in This VR Zombie Apocalypse

ORLANDO, Fla. – There’s a new virtual-reality experience in town, and it’s leagues above the competition.

  • ‘Arizona Sunshine’ VR experience to open soon at Pointe Orlando
  • Participants battle zombies on mission to rescue doctor with cure
  • It’s leagues ahead of other virtual-reality experiences out there

Nomadic, a California-based startup, has taken the popular VR game Arizona Sunshine and turned it into a terrifying and thrilling interactive experience.

In this version, players must find the doctor who has a cure for the zombie outbreak. Problem is, he’s holed up in a refinery overrun by zombies.

If you make it in time, he lives. If you don’t, well, let’s just say, it’s bad news for the doctor.

Before beginning their adventure, players must strap on a VR headset and backpack.

The game starts in a dimly-lit room that contains multiple props, including weapons and a filing cabinet with an “Easter egg” inside. If you pull open the drawer in the real world, it opens in the virtual. Eventually, a train approaches, and once aboard, players will feel wind as it speeds down the tracks.

From there, players will encounter hordes of zombies as they move scene to scene. And the zombies are relentless. They climb over fences. They crawl over platforms. They are everywhere.

What sets Nomadic apart from competitors such as The Void (which currently has a VR experience at Disney Springs) is how interactive the sets are. Buttons must be pushed. Levers pulled. If players see a door in the virtual world, it exists in the real world. So when players reach out to turn the knob, it’s actually there.

At one point, players encounter a plank positioned “high above” the ground. Step on it, and the plank wobbles under your feet, giving the sense it could tilt at any moment.

Players will also encounter elevators and helicopters, each featuring realistic movements.

In addition to the amazing interactive elements, Arizona Sunshine features stellar visual effects. That’s no surprise, considering creative minds behind Nomadic worked for Industrial Light and Magic on the Star Wars prequels.

Arizona Sunshine can be experienced as a single player or with multiple players, and there are two versions: one with plenty of gore for those 17 and older and one that’s milder for those 13 and older.

Nomadic is set to open at Pointe Orlando soon, with plans to expand to other cities like Las Vegas and Los Angeles next year.

5 Things We Noticed in Newly-Filed Star Wars Hotel Plans

ORLANDO, Fla. — Disney World is building a Star Wars-themed hotel, and newly-filed permits are providing more clues about the upcoming project.

The hotel is being constructed just south of Disney’s Hollywood Studios, which will open Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, a new themed land, next year.

The documents filed earlier this month are labeled for “Project H,” which has been the hotel’s code name. They include a diagram of what appears to be the hotel’s first floor layout, which includes rooms, a dining area and more.

Here are five things we noticed in the new hotel permits.

Hotel guests could travel by shuttle

Disney previously said the hotel would be “seamlessly connected to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.” But the new permits give us a better idea of how.

It appears hotel guests will travel to and from the land via shuttles. The permits show an area designated for “shuttle parking.” The shuttles could be themed to keep hotel guest immersed in the “storytelling” aspect of the hotel experience.

Guest rooms include cabins and 1st class cabins

The permits show the guest rooms labeled as “cabins” followed by a room number. Larger rooms are called “1st Class Cabins.” The documents show two first class cabins and at least 32 standard cabins on either side.

Disney previously said that each “cabin window” room would include view of space. The effect would likely be created using screens.

Security screenings at the hotel

It appears that security screenings will take place when guests first enter the hotel. The documents show an area designated for “security metal detectors.” If that’s the case, they would help with the full immersion theme of the hotel, since hotel guests wouldn’t have to be screened with regular park guests.

Limited parking

It’s hard to tell how much parking will be available at the hotel, but the diagram included with the permits only show a limited number of spaces, including a few spaces for disabled guests.

Dining area and other amenities

A luxury hotel is expected to have amenities. And although that’s nothing new, these new permits give a better idea of what kind of extras hotel guests will have access to.

The plans show a dining area with a “buffet,” a courtyard, and a large area labeled “dojo.” Could that be a training dojo? Who knows, but it’s an interesting tidbit.

Disney has previously said this of the Star Wars hotel: “Families visiting this destination will board a starship that comes alive with characters and stories that unfold all around them during their voyage through the galaxy.”

An opening date has not yet been announced for the Star Wars hotel.

Meanwhile, Star Wars fans will get to explore a galaxy far, far away next year at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, which is set to open late fall 2019 in Florida and summer 2019 in California.

‘Fantastic Beasts 2’ Conjures $62 Million at Box Office

LOS ANGELES (AP) — “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” crawled, slithered and flew its way to the top of the weekend box office with a $62.2 million opening in the U.S. and Canada, according to studio estimates Sunday.

  • “Fantastic Beasts 2” earns $62.2 million at the box office
  • Sequel fell short of first film’s debut

The latest offering from the Harry Potter multiverse fell short of the opening of the first film in the Warner Bros. series, 2016′s “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” which debuted with $74 million in a similar November release and went on to earn $234 million in the U.S. and Canada.

But all the Harry Potter films have had a broad international reach, and “Fantastic Beasts” had a hearty worldwide weekend gross, bringing in $191 million internationally for a total of $253 million, according to the studio’s estimates.

“Clearly it’s a huge phenomenon globally,” said Jeff Goldstein, president of domestic distribution for Warner Bros.

Last week’s top film, “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch,” was second with $38.1 million, bringing its domestic tally to $126 million for Universal Pictures after two weekends. It took in $9.4 million more internationally.

“Bohemian Rhapsody,” 20th Century Fox’s Freddie Mercury biopic, is still rocking, taking third place with $15.7 million for a total of $127 million. It remains a global hit, bringing in an additional $45.5 million internationally.

“Fantastic Beasts,” the second film in the series of Potter prequels written by J.K. Rowling and starring Eddie Redmayne, Johnny Depp and Jude Law, had a budget of $200 million. Its reviews were largely lackluster, with critics saying Rowling’s magical world is wearing thin after 10 films.

Globally the first nine films have earned $8.5 billion, a total that this one’s worldwide take will inflate.

“This is yet another example of a movie whose opening weekend skewed heavily into the international territories,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for comScore. “This happens a lot with bigger franchise movies. For many of these blockbusters, it’s the international component that comes in and saves the day.”

In the U.S., Warner Bros. is hoping young devotees who are out of school will keep “Fantastic Beasts” in flight through Thanksgiving.

“It’s a big week coming up,” Goldstein said. “Friday is one of the biggest movie days of the year.”

It will have a major challenger in Disney’s “Ralph Breaks The Internet,” which opens Wednesday, as does “Creed II.”

“Fantastic Beasts” continues a year of high points and hits for Warner from a diverse string of movies, including “The Meg,” ″Crazy Rich Asians,” ″The Nun” and “A Star is Born.”

“Warner Bros. is on a roll that every studio would envy,” Dergarabedian said.

In this weekend’s smaller-budget openings, “Instant Family” starring Mark Wahlberg brought in $14.7 million for Paramount Pictures, and “Widows,” the latest from “12 Years a Slave” director Steve McQueen, earned $12.3 million domestically and $2.8 million internationally for 20th Century Fox. “Instant Family” has only opened in North America.

Overall, the weekend was down 14.5 percent in the U.S. and Canada from the same timeframe a year earlier, when “Justice League” made for a major pre-Thanksgiving weekend.

Here are estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to comScore. Where available, the latest international numbers for also are included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” $62.2 million ($191 million international).

2. “Dr Seuss’ The Grinch,” $38.1 million ($9.4 million international).

3. “Bohemian Rhapsody,” $15.7 million ($45.5 million international).

4. “Instant Family,” $14.7 million.

5. “Widows,” $12.3 million ($2.8 million international).

6. “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” $4.7 million ($6.7 million international).

7. “A Star Is Born,” $4.3 million ($5.5 million international).

8. “Overlord,” $3.8 million ($2.6 million international).

9. “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” $2.5 million ($2.8 million international).

10. “Burn The Stage: The Movie,” $2.3 million ($5.2 million international).
