Avatar picks unique names for four planned sequels

Avatar is a 20th Century Fox property, which means that it will soon be a Disney property. Lightstorm Entertainment and Fox already were collaborating with Disney as part of building a very real version of the movies as a totally immersive land at Walt Disney World.

There are at least four new Avatar films in the works. Lightstorm entertainment is filming multiple titles simultaneously to save costs. Now we’re learning the rumored titles for the next four Avatar movies. They’re pretty unique:

Avatar: The Way of Water
Avatar: The Seed Bearer
Avatar: The Tulkun Rider
Avatar: The Quest for Eywa

I think you can tell James Cameron is interested in telling some pretty unique stories from his world of Pandora. He’s spent years building up a mythology worthy of the box office numbers his initial Avatar film generated. Now he wants to tell the most interesting stories he can from that galaxy.

Cameron has, with the help of Disney’s Imagineers, already built some of that mythology into Pandora – The World of Avatar at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Hint Cameron has said the first sequel takes place largely in and around the ocean on Pandora.

Before Pandora – The World of Avatar opened, I think it was an open question if there were fans of Avatar like there were for Star Wars or Star Trek. Turns out there are plenty of them. They dress like Na’vi, learn to speak the language, collect memorabilia, and talk about what might be next for the franchise. In that way they’re very similar to Disney fans and will fit right in to the family.

We recently learned that a new logo for the Avatar movies will finally ditch the hated Papyrus font. Thanks for listening to your fans James!

Of the four new Avatar movies, The Way of Water is up first and will swim into theaters December 18, 2020.

Disney considering new direction for its Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise

With Captain Jack Sparrow (aka Johnny Depp) having moved on to another major movie franchise (The Harry Potter Forbidden Beast movies, natch) and the Pirates of the Caribbean movies that starred Depp finally coming full circle and providing closure for its earliest stars, perhaps now is the right time for a new take on the mega-franchise based on Disney’s classic attraction Pirates of the Caribbean.

Deadline Hollywood reports that Disney is now exploring a reboot of the Pirates of the Caribbean Franchise with the writing duo behind the Deadpool blockbusters – Rheet Reese and Paul Wernick. The pair also wrote “Zombieland” and its sequel “6 Underground” (currently in production with Ryan Reynolds in the lead role). That should probably give us a good idea of their sense of humor.

According to the report, Jerry Bruckheimer would return as producer for the films. But as of yet, there’s no idea if any of the original franchise stars would return, including Johnny Depp, or if it would begin with a clean slate. Depp has recently been seen as ‘problematic’ after issues in his personal life made him a box office risk.

The first five films in the Pirates franchise have earned the Mouse House a treasure chest worth more than $4.5 billion. There’s likely even more buried treasure out there for Disney if they can figure out how to keep the franchise going.

What would you like to see? A continuation of the existing franchise, a reboot in the same universe but with a different cast, or a complete restart with a new series and cast?

A special teaser trailer of new music in Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns

The music of Mary Poppins was so iconic, I’m pretty sure by just reading “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” you now have an ear worm for the entire day. We can thank the Sherman Brothers for that magical soundtrack. The long-anticipated sequel to Mary Poppins will feature all new original songs with music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman.

Shaiman is known in Hollywood as a hitmaker. He won a Tony for his score for the Broadway musical Hairspray and wrote much of the Broadway-themed music for NBC’s hit Television show SMASH.

This special teaser trailer contains a ton of new clips from the film along with a taste of the new music from the film:

Mary Poppins has come a long way since PL Travers first introduced her to the world in 1934. We can’t wait to get back to 17 Cherry Tree Lane and reconnect with the Banks children, not to mention Mary Poppins herself.

Pre-order the official soundtrack CD to Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns today on Amazon. Your purchase via this link will help support The Disney Blog. Thank you.

About the film:

In Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns,” an all new original musical and sequel, Mary Poppins is back to help the next generation of the Banks family find the joy and wonder missing in their lives following a personal loss. Emily Blunt stars as the practically-perfect nanny with unique magical skills who can turn any ordinary task into an unforgettable, fantastic adventure and Lin-Manuel Miranda plays her friend Jack, an optimistic street lamplighter who helps bring light—and life—to the streets of London.

“Mary Poppins Returns” is directed by Rob Marshall. The screenplay is by David Magee and the screen story is by Magee & Rob Marshall & John DeLuca based upon the Mary Poppins Stories by PL Travers. The producers are John DeLuca, p.g.a., Rob Marshall, p.g.a. and Marc Platt, p.g.a. with Callum McDougall serving as executive producer. The music score is by Marc Shaiman and the film features all new original songs with music by Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman. The film also stars Ben Whishaw as Michael Banks; Emily Mortimer as Jane Banks; Julie Walters as the Banks’ housekeeper Ellen; Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh and introducing Joel Dawson as the Banks’ children, with Colin Firth as Fidelity Fiduciary Bank’s William Weatherall Wilkins; and Meryl Streep as Mary’s eccentric cousin, Topsy. Angela Lansbury appears as the Balloon Lady, a treasured character from the PL Travers books and Dick Van Dyke is Mr. Dawes, Jr., the retired chairman of the bank now run by Firth’s character.

Plan to jump into your nearest theater on December 19th for Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns.”

Disney’s Mulan – Production begins on Disney’s Epic live-action movie

It’s time to get down to business as production has begun Disney’s live-action “Mulan” movie. While it’s based off the same Chinese folktale as Disney animation’s “Mulan,” it won’t be a musical and will have some different characters (ie, no magical dragons named Mushu).

Liu Yifei was cast as Hua Mulan following a year-long global casting search. Joining her in the film are: Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Ron Yuan, Tzi Ma, Rosalind Chao, Cheng Pei-Pei, Nelson Lee, Chum Ehelepola, with Gong Li, and Jet Li.

“Mulan” is the epic adventure of a fearless young woman who masquerades as a man in order to fight Northern Invaders attacking China. The eldest daughter of an honored warrior, Hua Mulan is spirited, determined and quick on her feet. When the Emperor issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army, she steps in to take the place of her ailing father as Hua Jun, becoming one of China’s greatest warriors ever.

The movie is directed New Zealand director Niki Caro (“Whale Rider,” “McFarland, USA”) with filming happening primarily in New Zealand and China.

This is the first time in a Disney movie for most of those actors and I hope American audiences enjoy being exposed to acting talent from around the world, not just the usual Hollywood A- or B-list. Actors from the continent of Asia are under-represented in the leading roles in Hollywood.

The film will open in U.S. theaters on March 27, 2020
