Marvel Studios chief discusses Marvel’s Avengers coming to Disney streaming service

Kevin Feige at 2015 D23 Expo

In an interview with THR, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige briefly discussed Marvel’s Avengers-focused programming for the as-yet-unnamed direct-to-consumer streaming service from Disney. The plan appears to be to produce longer ‘campfire’ stories.

“But Paul [Greengrass] mentioned the streaming service, and I think that is something that we’re going to be adding content to, which is exciting. I love your analogy with the campfire, right? As many people as you can get around the campfire and tell stories. Campfires can be different: We are going to tell stories for the streaming service that we wouldn’t be able to tell in a theatrical experience—a longer-form narrative, that’s what comics are, it’s about as longform a narrative as exists. But also maintaining that theatrical experience, which is our bread and butter, and the lines around the block, if you’re lucky.”

When I think campfire stories, I think shaggy dog stories that weave around for a long time with no real purpose other than a final punchline. I hope that’s not what Feige meant.

I like the television medium for Marvel (and Star Wars) because the storytelling you can do over 10-20 hours of programming allows for more characters to develop and for fans to get to know them, their strengths and foibles, via more plots and stories than you can fit into a 2 hour movie. Think Game of Thrones vs Lord of the Rings.

Netflix recently canceled two of its Marvel shows (Iron Fist and Luke Cage) leaving plenty of room for more Marvel on various streaming services. With Marvel under its roof, Disney has the home field advantage, of course.

We’re already expecting a number of shows from Marvel on Disney’s Streaming Service, but the two closest to confirmation are:

  • Loki and Scarlet Witch
  • Bucky (aka Winter Soldier) and Falcon team-up series.

What do you think of those pairings? What other long-form storytelling from Marvel would you like to see on Disney’s upcoming streaming service?

Daredevil 3rd season teaser trailer continues dark Marvel superhero shows on Netflix

The end of The Defenders revealed that Daredevil was alive and being cared for by nuns in a hospital. Faithful viewers of the Marvel television series on Netflix know a third season of Daredevil is coming soon. Now we have our first trailer for the highly anticipated season.

Yes, Daredevil is back in the confessional. Here’s what he says, “I once believed that justice could be found in a court of law. And in the light of day. But I was fooling myself. Darkness only responds to darkness. And the truth is I’d rather die as the devil than live as Matt Murdock.”

Matthew Murdock (Charlie Cox) seems to be un-killable. He survived a whole building being dropped on him at the end of The Defenders. Now, he’s revisiting the reasons he puts on the Daredevil suit and even discarding it for the darker original costume from season one.

Looks like season three is going to be a dark one. And by Marvel on Netflix standards, that’s pretty dark.

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD might continue after Season Six afterall

There’s hope Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD might continue after its next season. After a season 5 finale that left some fan favorite characters dead or missing, the thought that the show might not get renewed left fans sad. ABC took pity on the show’s many fans and decided to renew the short for a sixth season, but with just half the usual episodes.

With a loyal audience and a nearly unlimited Marvel universe to play in, Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD has been one of ABC’s most interesting television shows. A renewal for more shows in 2019 was not a guarantee, but we no know the first episode will return in July of 2019.

These additional episodes are largely to give a bit of closure to some of the storylines that have developed and been left hanging. The shift to a summer schedule could give the show even more life after that.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the President of ABC Entertainment Channing Dungey revealed Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD could continue after the mini-season currently slated for summer 2019.

Agents of SHIELD “might be able to continue for longer” in its new summer 2019 time slot said Dungey. “It’s my hope that by moving it to summer, where our live-same-day ratings are less important, it might be able to continue for longer.”

Production for season 6 is already underway with Clark Gregg directing the premiere episode, titled “Missing Pieces.” Which we can hope reunites some of the missing pieces from the Agents of SHIELD team.

What do you think about the move to a summer season for Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD? Would you like to see the show continue, even if it meant big changes to the cast?
