Marvel Studios chief discusses Marvel’s Avengers coming to Disney streaming service

Kevin Feige at 2015 D23 Expo

In an interview with THR, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige briefly discussed Marvel’s Avengers-focused programming for the as-yet-unnamed direct-to-consumer streaming service from Disney. The plan appears to be to produce longer ‘campfire’ stories.

“But Paul [Greengrass] mentioned the streaming service, and I think that is something that we’re going to be adding content to, which is exciting. I love your analogy with the campfire, right? As many people as you can get around the campfire and tell stories. Campfires can be different: We are going to tell stories for the streaming service that we wouldn’t be able to tell in a theatrical experience—a longer-form narrative, that’s what comics are, it’s about as longform a narrative as exists. But also maintaining that theatrical experience, which is our bread and butter, and the lines around the block, if you’re lucky.”

When I think campfire stories, I think shaggy dog stories that weave around for a long time with no real purpose other than a final punchline. I hope that’s not what Feige meant.

I like the television medium for Marvel (and Star Wars) because the storytelling you can do over 10-20 hours of programming allows for more characters to develop and for fans to get to know them, their strengths and foibles, via more plots and stories than you can fit into a 2 hour movie. Think Game of Thrones vs Lord of the Rings.

Netflix recently canceled two of its Marvel shows (Iron Fist and Luke Cage) leaving plenty of room for more Marvel on various streaming services. With Marvel under its roof, Disney has the home field advantage, of course.

We’re already expecting a number of shows from Marvel on Disney’s Streaming Service, but the two closest to confirmation are:

  • Loki and Scarlet Witch
  • Bucky (aka Winter Soldier) and Falcon team-up series.

What do you think of those pairings? What other long-form storytelling from Marvel would you like to see on Disney’s upcoming streaming service?

Captain Marvel Easter Egg hidden in First Poster

Higher. Further. Faster. That’s the call of Marvel Studios’ upcoming movie “Captain Marvel.” I’m not sure I’d technically call this an Easter Egg, since it is almost in plain sight, but there is a fun homage in the new poster. Released with the trailer, which debuted this morning, the poster will connect audiences with Carol Danver’s backstory and her super hero persona of Captain Marvel.

I love the poster and how it connects Carol Danver’s background as a fighter pilot with outer space. The suit looks amazing as does the Captain Marvel logo on the hanger doors. However, there’s one thing I don’t understand. Why is there a cat sauntering off the left side of the poster? I assume that’s an important plot point? Or was some illustrator at Marvel Studios just having some fun?

It turns out Carol Danvers has a cat named Chewie, named after Chewbacca from Star Wars (which was still just the original trilogy in the 1990s when the movie was set), who may play a role in the film. This should make fans of the comic book origins of the character happy.

In the comics, Chewie usually hangs out in the background or in Danver’s lap. Sometimes it has a larger part of the plot too. Can’t wait to see what part the cat has in the movie.

More Marvel coming to Disney’s Streaming Service, including Loki & Scarlet Witch

Disney’s big push to reach TV and movie consumers in their own homes, even those who have cut the cable cord, is coming in 2019. It’s still unnamed. But exactly what will be on the streaming service is coming into focus and, to no surprise, it will include plenty of Marvel content.

We’ve looked at some of the content that’s expected to appear on Disney’s new Streaming Service, and it’s always been assumed there would be some Marvel shows as part of its mix of entertainment options. Variety has an exclusive scoop on exactly what that content will be as shows move into production for the 2019 debut of the service.

According to the report, Disney and Marvel are planning a number of limited series focused on some of the more popular characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Some of those characters you wished had their own stand-alone movies, like Loki or Scarlet Witch, could get their own multi-episode arc instead.

These roles are closely tied to the actors who portrayed them on the big screen, so it’s expected that Tom Hiddleson and Elizabeth Olsen will return to play those characters, similarly with other characters.

These productions are expected to be cinematic in scale and produced by Marvel Studios, not Marvel TV, so they fit more closely into the stories that are woven for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Other Marvel TV shows may exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the influence only goes one way. Events in the movies impact the TV story lines, but not the other way around. These series will probably be ‘canon’ in that the events in them might have repercussions on the big screen.

Which of these characters to you think deserve their own movie or limited series?

Hawkeye
Drax the Destroyer
Nick Fury
Gamora
Maria Hill
The Winter Soldier
Loki
Scarlet Witch
Okoye
War Machine / Iron Patriot
Rocket
Black Widow
Shuri
Vision
Falcon

As a subscriber to Netflix and Amazon myself, I’m a big fan of these limited series. All the episodes usually drop at once, meaning you can binge them over a couple days if you want. At 6 to 8 hours in length, they allow for more complex storytelling than a 2 hour movie and deeper exploration of the character’s motivations, flaws, and strengths.

The move to put many of its titles on a streaming service is a gamble for Disney, but they feel like they have to meet their audience where they are. And they are increasingly on Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon. Disney smartly realizes they won’t have as much content as Netflix or Hulu out of the gate and plans to price their service lower out of the gate.

Does the addition of big name Marvel super heros to Disney’s streaming service make you more likely to subscribe when it debuts?

First Captain Marvel trailer drops on Good Morning America

She’s coming to save the Avengers, but first we have to travel back to the 1990s and find out who she is. Captain Marvel is one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most powerful super heroes. Brie Larson plays Carol Danvers, a fighter pilot who becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien race.

Good Morning America held a part at the Smithsonian Air & Space museum to celebrate the release of the trailer. You can watch it here right now:

If you couldn’t tell from the trailer, the Captain America is set in the 1990s, an era Marvel movies have yet to really explore. That means we get to see some of our favorite characters again, just younger. Agent Phil Coulson will return as well Director Nick Fury (back when he was fresh-eyed (two of them!) S.H.I.E.L.D. desk jockey.

We also know the big baddies of the film will likely be the Skrulls. Notorious shape-shifters, Talos, one of the Skrulls, takes on the earthly form of a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent (played by Ben Mendelsohn).

Based on the end-credit scene from “Avengers: Infinity War” we know that Captain Marvel will be called out of where ever she’s been hiding to help save the Avengers.

About the production:

Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel” is directed by the writing/directing team of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. An all-star collective of accomplished writers penned the screenplay, including Meg LeFauve, Nicole Perlman, Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Liz Flahive & Carly Mensch, and Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck.

The film stars Academy Award winner Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, McKenna Grace, with Clark Gregg, and Jude Law.

Kevin Feige is the producer of Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel.” Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Jonathan Schwartz, Patty Whitcher and Stan Lee are executive producers, with Lars Winther serving as co-producer/first assistant director and David Grant serving as co-producer.

Directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s creative team includes director of photography Ben Davis, Oscar®- nominated production designer Andy Nicholson, costume designer Sanja Hays, editors Elliot Graham and Debbie Berman, two-time Oscar nominee, visual effects supervisor Christopher Townsend, stunt coordinator Jim Churchman and six-time Oscar nominee, special effects supervisor Dan Sudick.

Black Panther moves into rarefied air at the box office

It’s been a big weekend for Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther.” The popular superhero movie crossed the $700 million milestone at the domestic box office. Yes, there is so much love for the movie that even though it’s available on home video, it’s still playing in a couple dozen theaters across the country.

Only two other films have earned more domestically — “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “Avatar.” Once The Walt Disney Company’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox all three films will be part of Disney’s library, which will be a very strong starting position for Disney’s direct-to-consumer streaming service which starts next year.

Black Panther’s worldwide total is now $1.347 Billion dollars on a reported cost of $200M. The success of director Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther shows that big-budget, afro-centric films with a black ensemble cast can make big money.

A Black Panther sequel rumored already be under consideration. However Marvel Studios is being coy about most future movies at the moment. Here’s what Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige had to say about a sequel.

“We definitely want Ryan to come back and that’s actively being worked out right now. When will it be? A lot of it will be when Ryan wants to and not rushing anything, but I think we have an idea of when it will be. But, again, [we’re] not going to announce any post-Avengers 4 movies until hopefully after Avengers 4,…” [ via collider ]

It sounds like Marvel and Disney want Ryan Coogler back, but might be willing to let him work on a couple of his own projects before the starting in on a Black Panther sequel. We’ve also heard rumors that other characters from Wakanda could have their own movie or TV series in the future, perhaps a spinoff featuring the women of Wakanda – Shuri, Okoye, and Nakia.

Whatever Marvel Studios and Ryan Coogler settle on, we can’t wait for a return to Wakanda.

Cast of “Guardians of the Galaxy” pens open letter in support of James Gunn

The cast of Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” has released an open letter addressed to The Walt Disney Company, which owns Marvel, asking them to rehire the director of the Guardians series – James Gunn. There is a growing chorus of support for Gunn from people who feel he was unfairly targeted for this firing.

The general outline of James Gunn’s firing is there for all to see: a handful of old tweets and videos of his with very raw and troubling content resurfaced (he had addressed their existence before he directed the first Guardians film apologizing then for the extreme humor used to promote the raw, edge films he was producing at the time), a few weeks ago a group of people known for targeting those whose politics they disagree with saw an opening and started a campaign to get James Gunn fired by Disney. We don’t know exactly why Disney ultimately decided fire Gunn from his work as Director on the 3rd “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie, but they did. Gunn, for his part, apologized and now there’s a campaign to have Disney rehire him. There’s a lot more subtlety than that, but this blog is not the place to get into those sorts of details.

We do want to share a new letter signed by nine major members of the Guardian’s series cast. Some of them have expressed their support for Gunn online previously, but all of them coming together like this might be Gunn’s best chance to be rehired yet.

Here’s a transcript of the letter:

To our fans and friends:

We fully support James Gunn. We were all shocked by his abrupt firing last week and have intentionally waited these ten days to respond in order to think, pray, listen, and discuss. In that time, we’ve been encouraged by the outpouring of support from fans and members of the media who who wish to see James reinstated as director of Volume 3 as well as discouraged by those so easily duped into believing the many outlandish conspiracy theories surrounding him.

Being in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” movies has been a great honor in each of our lives. We cannot let this moment pass without expressing our love support, and gratitude for James. We are not here to defend his jokes of many years ago but rather to share our experience having spent many years together on the set making Guardians of the Galaxy 1 and . The character he has shown in the wake of his firing is consistent with the man he was every day on set, and his apology, now and from years ago when first addressing these remarks, we believe is from the heart, a heart we all know, trust, and love. In casting each of us to help him tell the story of misfits who find redemption, he changed our lives forever. We believe the theme of redemption has never been more relevant than now.

Each of us looks forward to working with our friend James again in the future. His story isn’t over – not by a long shot.

There is little due process in the court of public opinion. James is likely not the last good person to be put on trial. Given the growing political divide in this country, it’s safe to say instances like this will continue, although we hope Americans from across the political spectrum can easy up on the character assassinations and stop weaponizing mob mentality.

It is our hope that what has transpired can serve as an example for all of us to realize the enormous responsibility we have to ourselves and to each other regarding the use of our written words when we etch them in digital stone; that we as a society may learn from this experience and in the future will think twice before we decide what we want to express; and in so learning perhaps can harness this capability to help and heal instead of hurting each other. Thank you for taking the time to read our words.

The Guardians of the Galaxy,

Signed by Chris Pratt, Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Sean Gunn, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Michael Rooker, and Karen Gillan.

These are strong words of support from the people who have known James Gunn best over the last 10 years. We wonder if Disney will choose to respond publicly to this open letter from the cast. So far they have said nothing more than their initial release announcing James Gunn’s firing.

Captain Marvel shows early signs of being a hit

The next film from Marvel Studios is “Captain Marvel” starring Brie Larson as Carol Danvers an Air Force pilot who becomes Captain Marvel when her DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident. The film wrapped filming recently and is scheduled for release on March 8, 2019. We’re not hearing much about it due to tight security around the set, but a few comments have slipped through the cracks recently that point in a very positive direction.

“Captain Marvel” was teased at the end of Marvel’s mega-hit “Avengers: Infinity War” when her logo appeared on a device just before the snap of Thanos claimed the life of Nick Fury. However, this movie is set in the ’90s, which means the events of Infinity War will be in the distance future during this movie.

It was revealed earlier this month that Samuel Jackson will reprise his Nick Fury character and Clark Gregg will also be back as Agent Coulson for “Captain Marvel.” Both will be digitally de-aged around 25 years for the movie. If you compared the digital de-aging process from when we saw it in “TRON Legacy” with Jeff Bridges to what we just saw in “Ant-Man and the Wasp” with Michelle Pfeiffer and Michael Douglas, it’s clear the process has come a long way. It should be even more seamless in “Captain Marvel.”

Early positive feedback

EW recently spoke with Jude Law who has an undisclosed role in the superhero film. Although he’s rumored to play the original Mar-vell, Law would not confirm or deny it. Instead he praised the work of Larson, “Brie Larson has approached it with incredible dedication and devotion. She really turned out a wonderful performance — fun and feisty and smart. I think she’s going to be absolutely magnificent.”

This is very encouraging early sign that “Captain Marvel” will be another fantastic hit for Marvel. The Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it, is supposed to reach its dramatic conclusion in Avengers 4. Who knows where Marvel movies will go from there, but Disneys’ purchase of 21st Century Fox promises to mix things up. For the first time Marvel will be able to bring the X-men franchise and Fantastic Four into their super hero movie universe.

Mavel Studios president Keven Feige has said Captain Marvel is one of the Marvel Universe’s most powerful heroes. Yet, as we’ve seen in all the films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far, all of the super heroes have their own flaws, their own humanity. It’s the exploration of that tension that makes Marvel’s movies so popular with fans.

Are you planning on seeing “Captain Marvel” in theaters?
