Baby Okapi Born at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge

Also, we celebrated World Okapi Day this week with the announcement of the birth of a rare okapi at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Weighing in at 54 pounds, the calf was up and mobile within the first hour of his birth on Oct. 1. He has been nursing and bonding with his mom. The pair will remain in a backstage habitat for the next few months before joining the animals on the savanna.

The calf’s parents – mom Zelda and dad Mandazi – were chosen to breed through the Species Survival Plan (SSP), which is overseen by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and ensures responsible breeding of threatened and endangered species. Check our original Okapi story for more images and information.

Here are some of the other stories we worked on this week.

Check Out These Renderings of the New 15-Story Tower Rising at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort

Last year, we announced a massive expansion of Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort set to debut next summer at Walt Disney World Resort. Today, we’re excited to share more details about the reimagining of this popular resort hotel, including some new renderings that show off how beautiful it’s going to look when completed.

The centerpiece of this expansion is a new 15-story tower, which you can see in the rendering above. It will add 545 guest rooms (including 50 suites!) to the resort. The tower will be the new main entry point when visiting the resort; in the rendering below, you can see the tower’s gorgeous two-story lobby where you can check in and find some cozy places to relax. Atop the tower, you can look forward to dining in a themed and unique table-service restaurant that will provide incredible views of Walt Disney World Resort.

Rendering of the new two-story lobby coming to Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort

The rest of Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort is being refreshed, as well. All 1,800-plus existing rooms have been fully updated with new fixtures, furnishings and lighting. Another new restaurant will be located on an island in the middle of the resort’s 14-acre lake, Lago Dorado, with new walkways stretching across the water allowing for quick and convenient walks to and from all parts of the resort. And a fresh, sophisticated color palette will tie the entire experience together, blending the new and the newly reimagined.

We’re looking forward to sharing new details about Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort as they become available. Keep checking back here for more information!

Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa Awarded Hawaii Tourism Authority’s Highest Honor

It’s been said that language is central to a culture, and that is definitely true for the beautiful Hawaiian language, ‘Olelo Hawaii, that is such an integral part of Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, Hawai‘i.

At Aulani Resort we have been celebrating the Hawaiian culture — with a touch of Disney magic — alongside our guests and Disney Vacation club members, since opening in 2011. Our ‘Olelo Room, where Hawaiian language is the central theme, as is evident in the décor, furniture, and even in the service, continues to be a Guest and local favorite. ‘Olelo is Hawaiian for “word” or “to converse” and even the cast members working in this special place speak fluent Hawaiian! The ‘Olelo Room is a place where guests and locals gather to hear beautiful Hawaiian music played nightly by award-winning musicians, and where Hawaiian-language speakers gather and converse, and for those ready to learn, the décor features wooden carvings of common objects, each labeled with their Hawaiian names.

Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa

It’s this commitment to the language and the culture that led the Hawaii Tourism Authority to award Aulani Resort, alongside Hawaiian Airlines and ‘Aha Punana Leo, with its highest honor — the Tourism Legacy Award. This award, presented at the 2018 Global Tourism Summit, honors organizations and businesses that perpetuate Hawaiian culture, and this year the honorees were identified for helping to normalize Hawaiian language into everyday life.

“We provide a way for kama’aina (Hawaii residents) to show their pride in their home, and a place where Hawaiian-language speakers can pursue and share their passion for ‘Olelo Hawaii,” said Aulani Resort General Manager Kimberly Agas, who recently accepted the award alongside Aulani Cultural Advisor Kahulu De Santos on behalf of the resort. “At Aulani Resort, Hawaiian language proficiency is a valued professional skill, and conversations in ‘Olelo Hawaii are a common daily occurrence.”

It is an honor for our Aulani Resort to be recognized by our community, and by our industry; and it’s even more humbling to be recognized for our efforts in perpetuating the Hawaiian culture.

During your next visit to Aulani Resort, be sure to stop by the ‘Olelo Room and literally surround yourself in Hawaiian language!

Note: In printed materials, Aulani uses the contemporary spelling of Hawaiian words, which includes marks such as the kahako (macron). Because these marks do not often display correctly in electronic formats, including the text of the Disney Parks Blog, we’ve omitted them to ensure clarity.

Island living at Walt Disney World Resort just got even better, as several new features at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort debuted today. Caribbean-Inspired Eats Coming to Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort

Recently, we’ve given you a few sneak peeks at the amazing new dining experiences coming to Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort. Today, I’ve got some exciting (and tasty) new details to reveal about the expansion of Centertown Market as well as a festive, pool-side bar called Banana Cabana!

First up is Centertown Market – this quick-service restaurant has been expanded and reimagined as an indoor street market. The new and inviting space includes open shutters, wooden light posts, awnings, and most importantly, delicious new eats. The new menu at Centertown Market will include a combination of family-friendly fast casual offerings mixed with customizable Latin and Caribbean-inspired dishes. One of the highlights of the menu is the new Island Bowl available for breakfast and dinner.

Customizable Island Bowls at Centertown Market at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort

These bowls can be customized with your choice of base, protein, sauce, and if you’re ordering a breakfast bowl, you can even choose what kind of egg you want on top (scrambled, poached, or tofu scramble). Bases include red beans and rice (offered all day), home fries (for breakfast), and greens (for dinner). For proteins, choose between rotisserie beef, bacon, chorizo, or plant-based sausage for breakfast and rotisserie beef, pork shoulder, banana leaf-wrapped fish, jerk chicken thighs, or vegan chipotle seitan for dinner! Breakfast sauce options include salsa verde or pico de gallo, while the dinner sauces include chimichurri, garlic ranch, or spicy pink sauce. With all of these options, there are over 30 different combinations to choose from for both breakfast and dinner!

Breakfast Entrées at Centertown Market at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort

On the breakfast menu are classic dishes like Eggs Benedict or the All American Breakfast Platter with eggs, home fries, sausage, bacon, and toast as well as island-inspired creations like Coconut Waffles with fresh fruit or the Banana Pancakes topped with granola and pineapple chunks and served with sausage and maple syrup.

Dinner Entrées at Centertown Market at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort

Fresh salads, Sicilian-style pizza, pasta dishes, and a variety of sandwiches and burgers round out the dinner menu to provide a little something for everyone in the family!

Desserts at Centertown Market at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort

If you’re craving something sweet, try the Tropical Tart with key lime, mango, and passion fruit curd with Chantilly or the Chocolate Crème Tart with chocolate cake, coffee Chantilly, and caramel crispies.

Kid’s Meals at Centertown Market at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort

There’s also a wonderful array of options for kids! They’ll enjoy some familiar favorites like Pirate Mickey Waffles and French Toast for breakfast and Chicken Breast Nuggets, Tacos, and Grilled Cheese for dinner. For the adventurous little sailors, our chefs created some unique new offerings like the Egg Popper for breakfast (a hard-boiled egg pop with green pirate juice, roasted pineapple, and bacon) and the Beef and Mushroom-blended Cheeseburger for dinner (with “cauli” fries, orange sauce, and a mini “build-your-own” Island Bowl).

The expansive beverage island will offer fountain beverages featuring Coca-Cola® Freestyle, freshly-brewed coffee, and a variety of teas as well as draft beer and single-serve wine and cocktails. Or you can step inside the Grab ‘n Go Market, where you’ll find delightful specialty coffees and quick bites to-go.

Beverages at Banana Cabana Pool Bar at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort

Now – let’s talk about the Banana Cabana! This pool-side bar will feature an outdoor lounge where your family can gather for some yummy food and refreshing alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The lounge is inspired by the festive culture found in the Caribbean, mixing a relaxed sitting area with a lively bar. Cabana-style drapes flank the seating groups and re-purposed steel drums will illuminate a central communal table made from a wooden boat.

Tropical Cocktail at Banana Cabana Pool Bar at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort

It’s always “island time” at Banana Cabana, and what better way to immerse yourself in those tropical vibes than with exclusive cocktails made with premium spirits and Caribbean seafood and mainland dishes. Delightfully-flavored libations include the Pink Guava Colada featuring rum, guava puree, pineapple juice, and cream of coconut and the Kraken Punch with spiced rum, blood orange sour, and pomegranate and orange juices. Caribbean beers will also be available for islanders along with a variety of craft and traditional beers and premium white and red wines on tap.

For non-alcoholic options, adventures await you with drinks made with fruit juices and tropical flavors. One of these drinks is the Tropical Paradise, a fruity blend of pineapple coconut, cinnamon, and lime dusted with nutmeg.

Centertown Market and Banana Cabana are set to open in late Fall of 2018 and are part of the greater reimagining of Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort. If you want to read more about these new dining experiences, check out our recent blog post – and don’t forget to keep checking the Disney Parks Blog for more info. All in the Details: Putting the Spirit of the Caribbean into the new Centertown Market

When Old Port Royale reopens at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort this fall, Guests will be able to check in and embark on their island-inspired vacation with new places to gather, dine and relax, including the newly expanded Centertown Market. Designed as an indoor street market-style quick service restaurant, Centertown Market is full of colors and details from the Caribbean.

Imagineers researched the variety of festivals found throughout the Caribbean islands and these celebrations served as the inspiration for the colorful, hand-painted mural found at the heart of Centertown Market. We caught up with some of the Imagineers as they were bringing this mural to life. Check out these sneak peeks below!

According to Walt Disney Imagineering, you may find a mural like this in a local marketplace building in the Caribbean. The mural depicts a street parade complete with music, dance and lavish costume pieces made from feathers and colorful hand-cut and fringed crepe paper.

Don’t forget to visit the all-new table service restaurant, Sebastian’s Bistro, for additional colorful details, including a screen of hand-painted fishing floats at the restaurant’s entrance.

All new colorful layout at Sebastian’s Bistro

Read more about these spaces in Gabriel’s blog post and be sure to check back for more details about Old Port Royale and the new food and beverage menus as we get closer to opening!
