Fun Facts About Universal’s Holiday Parade Featuring Macy’s

Share this post:

If your perfect idea of a holiday parade includes a light snowfall, twinkling lights, joyful music and the mix of merry and mayhem, then you’re in luck. Universal’s Holiday Parade featuring Macy’s has all of these – and more!

The parade made its debut last year and will return for our resort-wide Holidays celebration running Nov. 17 – Jan. 6. with a theme inspired by cherished childhood memories and brought to life by beloved characters.

As a member of the parade’s operations team, I’ve seen exactly what it takes to pull off this spectacular experience. It’s certainly no small feat, requiring countless Team Members working year-round. I recently rounded up some of my favorite facts:

  • The parade will travel a total of more than 26 miles as it makes its way down the streets of Universal Studios Florida each night.
  • Without a doubt, the highlight of this parade is its 15 intricately hand-crafted floats featuring characters from Despicable Me, Madagascar, Shrek and more. And these floats are big. Really big.
GIF Universal's Holiday Parade featuring Macy's Madagascar
  • Weighing in at about 30,000 pounds and measuring 35 feet long, the float featuring Shrek, Fiona and Dragon rivals the size of two large African elephants. Thanks to Dragon’s 16-foot wingspan, it’s also one of the widest.
GIF Universal's Holiday Parade featuring Macy's Shrek
  • It wouldn’t be a holiday parade without the classic Macy’s star balloons. These stars measure 24 feet wide or as wide as five taxi cars!

  • Piloting floats and balloons of this size takes practice, which is why training starts each summer for a team of nearly 300, including float operators, balloon handlers and parade escorts. (For the best view of all the floats and balloons in this year’s parade, Annual Passholders should watch from the exclusive viewing spot in front of Mel’s Diner!)

  • You’ll see more than 100 dancers and characters during the parade – all dressed to impress in their holiday finest.

  • Last year, more than 220 gallons of snow machine fluid were used to create a special Florida snow flurry during the parade’s finale.

Universal Orlando Resort Holiday Events 2018

What:

Merry, mischief and thrills all combine as Universal Orlando Resort unwraps its annual Holidays celebration beginning November 17. It’s a holiday celebration unlike any other where guests can do everything from sip hot Butterbeer and witness “The Magic of Christmas at Hogwarts Castle” to meet the mean, green one himself, The Grinch – and more.

And – on New Year’s Eve this year – families can ring in 2019 at a rockin’ New Year’s Eve celebration at Universal Studios Florida, while adults 21 and up can enjoy the upscale EVE celebration at Universal CityWalk.

See below for complete details on all of the ways guests can elevate their holidays at Universal Orlando Resort:

Where:

Universal Orlando Resort

More Details:

Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Florida and Universal’s Islands of Adventure

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is already one of the most immersive theme park experiences ever created. And now for the Holidays, it will transform into a wizarding wonderland with themed decorations, garlands and lights throughout the streets of Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley. Guests can enjoy special holiday-themed performances by the Frog Choir – comprised of Hogwarts students and their giant croaking frogs – and Celestina Warbeck and the Banshees, one of the wizarding world’s most popular singing sensations. There will also be seasonal food and beverages – including hot Butterbeer.

And, as night falls, guests will revel in a dazzling projection of holiday spirit as Christmas moments inspired by the Wizarding World come to life on Hogwarts castle for “The Magic of Christmas at Hogwarts Castle.”

Universal’s Holiday Parade featuring Macy’s at Universal Studios Florida

Merry and mayhem combine as Santa Claus, the Minions and other beloved characters from Illumination’s Despicable Me, Shrek and Madagascar take the streets for Universal’s Holiday Parade featuring Macy’s – including more than 30 larger-than-life balloons and floats, hundreds of performers and more.  Guests may also get the opportunity to dance and interact with some of the characters during special appearances prior to the parade.

Grinchmas at Universal’s Islands of Adventure

See the maven of mischief himself during Grinchmas at Universal Orlando. Guests can enjoy “Grinchmas Who-liday Spectacular” – a live retelling of Dr. Seuss’s holiday classic starring the mean, green one – and special appearances by the merry Whos from Who-ville throughout Seuss Landing. Guests may also join the Grinch and his friends at Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous for a separately ticketed breakfast on select dates (tickets for this festive breakfast are now available).

Mannheim Steamroller at Universal Studios Florida

The best-selling holiday artist of all time, Manheim Steamroller, returns to Universal Studios Florida to fill the air with the sounds of the season. Guests can take in live concerts at the Music Plaza Stage on the following nights: Nov. 17, 18, 24, 25 and Dec. 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16.

Offers to Experience Universal Orlando’s Holidays Celebration

Access to all of the above Holidays festivities is included with admission to the parks or with an Annual Pass, which are now available with up to six months free. Visit www.UniversalOrlando.com/AnnualPass for details about special savings and block-out dates.

Guests can also take advantage of the Florida Resident Holiday Stay & Play Package, which provides even more value for guests staying on-site during the holiday season, with savings on travel from Nov. 17 through Dec. 20. The package not only includes three-night hotel accommodations, but also base admission to all three theme parks at Universal Orlando Resort – including Universal’s Volcano Bay.

New Year’s Eve Celebrations at Universal Orlando

Guests can ring in 2019 with style at Universal Orlando with various New Year’s Eve celebrations that offer something for everyone.

Universal Studios Florida will host its biggest New Year’s Eve celebration yet – complete with rockin’ party zones at the Music Plaza Stage and Central Park areas of the park, live upbeat music, appearances by some of guests’ favorite characters, party favors, confetti and – of course – pyrotechnics.  It’s fun for the entire family and it’s included with theme park admission, or with a Preferred or Premier Annual Pass.

Guests 21 and up can enjoy the ultimate upscale party at EVE at Universal CityWalk, where they get access to six CityWalk clubs with live bands and DJs, unlimited gourmet cuisine, and the chance to dance all night long on Orlando’s largest outdoor dance floor featuring award-winning DJ M-Squared. And once the clock strikes midnight, guests will enjoy a Champagne toast and pyrotechnics display. EVE tickets are on sale now and there is a $30 discount if purchased before Dec. 15. Guests must be 21 and up to attend.

Some of Universal Orlando’s on-site hotels will also join in the New Year’s Eve fun, with entertainment, midnight toasts and more. Highlights include a “ROCK-in!” New Year event at the Hard Rock Hotel, featuring a balloon drop and live countdown from Times Square via satellite, and Jake’s “Best of 2018” Beer Dinner at Loews Royal Pacific Resort.

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party exclusive Disney photopass magic moments

The holidays at Walt Disney World are known for the extra dusting of magical theming that festoon the parks and resorts. It’s very photographic and Disney’s Photopass photographers are always there to assist you with a selfie or family portrait. At this year’s Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party you’ll be able to find a few extra tidings of joy in exclusive merry photo opportunities.

This year you’ll encounter Toy Soldiers from Mickey’s Once Upon A Christmastime Parade, Tinker Bell, Olaf, gingerbread man, and more.

There are also ‘magic shot’ opportunities featuring holly-jolly props like Tinker Bell in the lamp located near Beast’s castle in Fantasyland.

We also love the ‘magic shot’ animated videos, which are perfect for adding to your facebook page or other social media accounts. Don’t forget to visit old saint Nick for a special animated magic shot.

For Annual Passholders its included with your pass, but day visitors can also purchase Memory Maker pass. If you’re just attending the party, purchase Memory Maker One Day and apply the entitlement for the day you attend the party. You’ll also need the My Disney Experience app to see and download your photopass moments.

Hint: Although MVMCP, and all the fun, starts at 7pm, remember your ticket gets you in at 4pm.

We hope you find plenty of holiday joy at Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party.

Beyond Downtown Artwalk: Duval Mercantile Pop-Up Shop for the Holidays

Duval Mercantile, Art Walk pop-up, Downtown Jacksonville, Emily Moody, Varick Rosete

A Jacksonville business owner is making it easier to shop local this holiday season. Emily Moody-Rosete, who operates the downtown Wolf & Cub boutique on Laura Street, is bringing a pop-up storefront to the space formerly occupied by La Cena restaurant. Located at 211 North Laura Street, Duval Mercantile will grace the historic Elks Building.

Duval Mercantile will celebrate its grand opening November 7th during Artwalk and will remain open through the month of December. As the former owner the live music venue Underbelly in the downtown core and Anomaly in the Five Points neighborhood, Emily Moody-Rosete knows how to create a buzz. She’s hoping to energize Downtown with a concept that will bring together artists and makers in a shared space and inspire shoppers to curate an interesting and eclectic list of locally produced goods this holiday season.

Vendors like Congaree and Penn and Jax Brothel will be among those to stock such items as local gourmet foods and sundries, candles, pottery, and vegan bath products. There are no plans to update the interior space with a major build out save for adding a couple coolers to refrigerate necessary items. “Because its a pop-up, we didn’t want to spend a ton of money making it real pretty,” she says. “It’s going to compliment Wolf & Cub but still have its own vibe, too.”

While the concept is designed to give local makers a dedicated space to showcase and sell their goods, Moody-Rosete is also hoping to increase Downtown’s accessibility to retailers in an area plagued by more empty storefronts than established businesses.

“Being Downtown now for a few years, I hear on a daily basis from clients coming in and people traveling through, tours actually coming through to visit the city. It’s embarrassing to hardly have any retail Downtown, so people walk in my shop and ask what else is there to do down here, and I give them a little run down. There’s lots of places to eat and drink, but there’s not a lot of retail,” says Emily Moody-Rosete.

“That’s unfortunate, but the city doesn’t really encourage the nurturing of small business. They’re more into the multi-million dollar projects, which I get too, but, at the end of the day, the small guys are the ones who are creating the culture and the feel for a district.”

“That’s unfortunate, but the city doesn’t really encourage the nurturing of small business. They’re more into the multi-million dollar projects, which I get too, but, at the end of the day, the small guys are the ones who are creating the culture and the feel for a district. That’s what I seek out. When I travel, I go to all the cool little local businesses, and that’s how I get the feel for a city. That’s where Duval Mercantile comes in.”

Emily and Varick Rosete based the model for Duval Mercantile on their early experiences with Wolf & Cub, which they initially operated at such venues as Jaxsons Night Market and Artwalk. The couple expanded the business and opened a pop-up shop in Riverside’s Brooklyn Station during the 2015 holiday season. The success of that venture led to a permanent storefront the following year. If Duval Mercantile does well, it could become a regular fixture and establish a business model to encourage more retailers to follow suit.

“We’re just trying to make it work for a few months. If it sticks, then we’ll visit maybe signing a lease there, maybe finding a different spot. Who knows. We’re just taking it day by day for now,” she says, “I’m an optimist so I hope that it is possible. Is it possible in a time frame that I feel is reasonable? Maybe not necessarily. That’s why we just kind of took things into our own hands. We don’t have time to wait around for the city to recognize us. We just have to make it happen. Hopefully it’s that ‘if you build it, they will come’ kind of thing.”
