It’s going to snow dollar signs earlier than expected in 2019. Disney has moved the sequel to its animated mega-hit Frozen up five days from its original Thanksgiving opening date. Frozen 2 will now open on Friday November 22.
The move switches the film to what is essentially an open weekend as Fox had previously claimed the date for an untitled Fox/Marvel movie. Since Disney now effectively owns Fox, even though the Disney-Fox merger hasn’t officially gone through, moving that film to another weekend won’t be a problem.
Disney likes to open films on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Recent titles opening on that date include, “Coco,” “Moana,” “The Good Dinosaur,” and this year’s “Ralph Breaks The Internet.” Oh yeah, the original Frozen opened wide on Thanksgiving Eve too.
The weekend before Thanksgiving is a popular opening slot for tent-pole franchises like Harry Potter, Twlight, and the Hunger Games. Perhaps this is Disney’s way of saying expect a Frozen 3, 4 and probably 5. Or more likely, Disney hopes it can now own multiple weekends for its frozen juggernaut.
“Frozen” was a huge box office hit. It’s opening five day holiday weekend total was $93.5 million and the total worldwide box office currently stands at $1.28 billion. A number sure to thaw any frozen heart in Burbank should the sequel even approach it.
The animated feature from Disney also won two Oscars. One for best animated feature and the other for best original song, “Let It Go” from husband-and-wife songwriting team Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez. We will see if the sequel reach the same artistic heights of the original.
