Who Has the Best Burger in Central Florida?

Burger generic

So much has changed since the last time we conducted a search for Best Burger in our Foodster Awards for Independent Restaurants, one of our most popular categories.

For one thing, many of the nominiees from last year are no longer open, including North Quarter Tavern, Oblivion Taproom, Nova, TR Fire Grill and Nona Tap Room.

For another thing: The burger game has really been kicked up a couple of notches by some newcomers, some of whom you’ll see in the list of nominees below.

Greek Corner Wins Foodster Award

Greek Corner

The Greek Corner, the Greek restaurant located, um, on a corner in the Ivanhoe district, has been voted Best Greek in our Foodster Awards for Independent Restaurants.

The recently reopened Mykonos, in Longwood, placed second and Mediterranean Deli of Orlando was third.

The Greek Corner, which opened in 2005, is known for its patio with a view of Lake Ivanhoe across the street. It’s popular for its gyro sandwiches but also such traditional dishes as moussaka and avgolemeno soup.

In placing his vote for Mykonos, Brian N Bengie Murray said, “Much improved quality of food, service and atmosphere at the new and improved Mykonos in Longwood. Our new “go to” place for Greek food since the restaurant moved and reopened.”

Mediterranean Deli, on Fairbanks Avenue, is liked as much for the friendly owners as for the delicious food.

Congratulations to the winners and to all of the finalists.

Nominations are currently being accepted for Best Italian restaurant. Place your vote before Oct. 17. The restaurants with the most nominations will advance to the finals.

What’s the Best Italian Restaurant in Central Florida?

Terralina clams

There was a time when a restaurant would boil up some pasta, toss on some meat rolled into a ball, douse it all with tomato sauce and call it Italian.

My how things have changed.

Now you can find more nuanced Italian food inspired by the many regions of the country: Ligurian, Neapolitan, Tuscan, Sicilian. And so much of it is so very good. So let’s find the restaurant most deserving to receive the Foodster Award for Best Italian.

This is going to be a difficult category to narrow down. The restaurants listed here are among the best Italians in town. You may select up to FIVE of your favorites you’d like to see advance to the finals.

If you have a favorite Italian restaurant not on the list, you may write the name of the restaurant in. But please, be certain that the restaurant isn’t listed elsewhere on the roster already. If it is, your write-in vote — and any subsequent votes it receives — will be deleted; the votes will not be added to the previous entry.

Also, remember that the Foodster Awards are for Independent Restaurants with three or fewer locations. Any chains written in will also be deleted. No chains.

Nominations will close on Oct. 17. The restaurants receiving the most votes will advance to the finals.

Here are the top vote getters from the nominating stage for Best Greek Restaurant in our Foodster Awards for Independent Restaurants.

After placing your vote, leave a comment below telling us why you like your selection (be sure to mention the name of the restaurant in you comment otherwise we won’t know which one you’re talking about). We may use your comments when we announce the winners.

Voting ends Sept. 19 and the winners will be announce Sept. 20.

Who has the Best Greek Food in Orlando?

Kebabs

Our next Foodster Award for Independent Restaurants will be for Best Greek. Who has your favorite souvlaki? Whose ouzo oozes warmth? Let us know.

These are the nominees for Best Greek Restaurant. You may vote for as many as five nominees. You may also write in a candidate, but please, make sure the name isn’t already on the list — if it is, your entry and any subsequent votes for it will be deleted. Also, do not nominate a restaurant with more than three locations.

Note: This category is for restaurants that identify as Greek — Mediterranean and Middle Eastern categories will be separate.

The top vote getters will advance to the finals.

Nominations will be accepted through Aug. 29.

Bad As’s Sandwich Wins Foodster Award

Bad ass Sand

Badd Ass logoBad As’s Sandwich, the Milk District sandwicherie, is the winner of the Best Sandwich Foodster Award for Independent Restaurants. Beefy King, which just celebrated its 50th anniversary, took second place and Yellow Dog Eats came in third.

“Bad As’s has very creative sandwiches that you won’t find anywhere else,” said a comment left under the name Allison Benner Andrews Chancey on the Foodsters page. “It’s a tiny restaurant, but what it lacks in tables it makes up for in taste.”

James McLane wrote, “It’s all about Bad As’s! Inventiveness, creativity, perfection between bread.”

Tiffany Wilkes was just as adamant in her vote for Beefy King. “Their classic and simple roast beef sandwich, spuds (tater tots), and signature sauces are worth driving out of your way for,” she wrote in her comment. “Seriously, we drove 162 miles from Palm Beach County to Orlando last month just to celebrate Beefy King’s 50th anniversary. It is that good!”

Terry Hladky Smith agreed: “Beefy King…Lots of delicious choices & the service is down home friendly.”

Sandwich was one of the most hotly contested Foodster categories to date. Nice to see so many people passionate for their favorite sandwichmakers.
