Fun Facts About Universal’s Holiday Parade Featuring Macy’s

Share this post:

If your perfect idea of a holiday parade includes a light snowfall, twinkling lights, joyful music and the mix of merry and mayhem, then you’re in luck. Universal’s Holiday Parade featuring Macy’s has all of these – and more!

The parade made its debut last year and will return for our resort-wide Holidays celebration running Nov. 17 – Jan. 6. with a theme inspired by cherished childhood memories and brought to life by beloved characters.

As a member of the parade’s operations team, I’ve seen exactly what it takes to pull off this spectacular experience. It’s certainly no small feat, requiring countless Team Members working year-round. I recently rounded up some of my favorite facts:

  • The parade will travel a total of more than 26 miles as it makes its way down the streets of Universal Studios Florida each night.
  • Without a doubt, the highlight of this parade is its 15 intricately hand-crafted floats featuring characters from Despicable Me, Madagascar, Shrek and more. And these floats are big. Really big.
GIF Universal's Holiday Parade featuring Macy's Madagascar
  • Weighing in at about 30,000 pounds and measuring 35 feet long, the float featuring Shrek, Fiona and Dragon rivals the size of two large African elephants. Thanks to Dragon’s 16-foot wingspan, it’s also one of the widest.
GIF Universal's Holiday Parade featuring Macy's Shrek
  • It wouldn’t be a holiday parade without the classic Macy’s star balloons. These stars measure 24 feet wide or as wide as five taxi cars!

  • Piloting floats and balloons of this size takes practice, which is why training starts each summer for a team of nearly 300, including float operators, balloon handlers and parade escorts. (For the best view of all the floats and balloons in this year’s parade, Annual Passholders should watch from the exclusive viewing spot in front of Mel’s Diner!)

  • You’ll see more than 100 dancers and characters during the parade – all dressed to impress in their holiday finest.

  • Last year, more than 220 gallons of snow machine fluid were used to create a special Florida snow flurry during the parade’s finale.

Sunrise. Beach. Yoga.

As a yogi myself, the perfect vacation revolves around zen relaxation. Just a few months ago we opened Universal’s Aventura Hotel. The vibes of our new resort hotel are the definition of relaxation. The pool is calming, the rooms are sleek… oh, and the rooftop bar has some of the BEST views of our parks.

One of the amazing benefits of this hotel is being able to walk just a few steps right into Universal’s Volcano Bay. Could you imagine, sunrise beach yoga before a full day in the park? Me too! That’s why we invited a group of yogis to stay at our newest resort hotel and experience a one-time yoga session right on Waturi Beach.

Here’s a recap of what our Universal Yogis experienced.

The group checked into Universal’s Aventura Hotel and received beach totes with surprises inside.

They enjoyed food and amazing views at Bar 17 Bistro, Aventura Hotel’s rooftop bar.

How amazing is this?

Each yogi spent the night at Aventura Hotel and prepared for an early morning.

The next morning, they took the walking path from Aventura Hotel to Universal’s Volcano Bay.

Each yogi was equipped with a towel that they set up on Waturi Beach with a perfect view of Krakatau.

If this isn’t zen, we don’t know what is.

Everyone participated in a 60 minute yoga flow on the beach.

And of course, no Universal event is complete without breaking the rules a little… We gave our rebel yogis some delicious vegan VooDoo Doughnuts to enjoy during breakfast after their workout.

We’re so grateful for our Universal Yogis.

This was a one-time yoga event at Universal Orlando, but we do offer other unique events, so make sure to follow us on our social media channels and blog for your chance to attend a future social media event.

Closing Thoughts On Halloween Horror Nights 2018

Closing Thoughts On Halloween Horror Nights 2018

Share this post:

Once again, we are truly honored to have had such a successful Halloween Horror Nights. This year’s event has gone down in our record books as the hottest and most haunted houses we’ve ever created!

We thank all of our scareactors, technicians, production support, Team Members, fans, and families (for putting up with our crazy schedules) for a great Halloween Horror Nights 2018.

Here are some closing thoughts from the creative minds behind this year’s Halloween Horror Nights…

Show Director, Charles Gray

Poltergeist at Halloween Horror Nights 2018

On the final night of the event, I like to say my goodbyes to not only cast and crew, but to the sounds of the event. I can see visuals anytime on social media or hanging on the walls of our Art & Design offices. But year after year, the audio tracks of Halloween Horror Nights have become a special memory for me.

  • I want the environmental sounds from Seeds of Extinction and the score from Carnival Graveyard to remain in my head.
  • I will walk through the haunted houses on the final night and absorb my favorite scares.
  • I will smile when I walk through Slaughter Sinema and hear a crazed kid scream, “I’ll eat your guts for dinner!”
  • I will snicker when I hear Loomis yell, “No!  No!  No!” into the night air.
  • Hearing, “They’re heeeere” that final time will induce some melancholy and a sense of pride.

I am so proud of what the entire team has accomplished this year. That pride extends from the tech teams to the scareactors. Everyone should be proud of the heart and soul they poured into this twenty-eighth year of Halloween Horror Nights. 2019 is already shaping up to be a year of surprises. See you next year.

Show Director, Blake Braswell

Killer Klowns from Outer Space at Halloween Horror Nights 2018

The end of another Halloween Horror Nights has come. And as it fades away into the fog, I know this terror-filled beast will linger long in my heart. What this talented team of creators, designers, technicians and scareactors brought to life were some of the very first horror stories I experienced as a child.

I couldn’t be more proud to have played a part in this year’s event. I hate to see it go, but the tendrils of next year have already crept into our view, and I am thrilled for the screams yet to come.

 Show Director, Patrick Braillard

Stranger Things at Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights 2018

We are about to close the gates on another incarnation of Halloween Horror Nights. Soon the haunted houses and scare zones that you knew this year will disappear, making way for new experiences next year.

The beast that is Halloween Horror Nights is never satisfied with the status quo. It is always evolving, always changing. Sometimes that change is seen as growth—can you say 10 houses?! Sometimes it means welcoming a group of maniacs inside—Academy of Villains, can you feel me?!

But in all of that growth and change, there are things that remain as steady today as they were during our very first event—the passion. The passion of the teams that develop, operate, and manage the event (truly the best in the world). The passion of the scareactors, who are the lifeblood of the event. And of course, the passion of the incredible fans who devote their time and energy to the promotion of all things Halloween Horror Nights (sometimes that involves tattoos…).

We’re already in the pit, working on 2019…and we cannot wait to scare you then too…passionately.

The Secret’s Out: It’s #UniversalSZN

The Secret’s Out: It’s #UniversalSZN

Share this post:

The jig is up… locals and theme park experts know the best times of the year to visit Universal Orlando Resort AND I wanted to share this little secret with our truest fans. Don’t get me wrong, with awesome annual events, new attractions and shows, it’s always a good time to visit, but if there are sweeter days, why not take advantage? When the weather is not so frightful, school is in session, and wait times are at their finest.

If you didn’t already know, now is the perfect time of year and it is our #UniversalSZN.

So what exactly is so great about #UniversalSZN?

The Weather is Just Showing Off at This Point

GIF Weather - UniversalSZN

Let’s start with the weather. It’s not too cold and it’s not too hot – it’s just perfect. As a Florida native, I’m aware of the beautiful beaches, stunning sunrises, and marvelous thunderstorms. However, there’s one thing I’ll never get used to, and that is “Summer Sweats.” That’s what I call when you sweat immediately after going outside. Not a problem during #UniversalSZN! I can wear whatever I want. Can I wear a scarf and shorts? Yes. Can I wear a jacket and sandals? Yes. Can I wear a leotard? Yes?

Wait Times at Their Finest

GIF Wait Times - UniversalSZN

The biggest reason #UniversalSZN is the best season is the ability to have more time to do whatever you want, when you want. Shorter wait times allow you to ride your favorite rides multiple times without wasting precious time. You don’t have to be strategic, just relax and enjoy the perks. For me, being able to ride Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit multiple times is one of the best things about #UniversalSZN.

Now that the “Floridian” secret is out, tell your closest friends and family about #UniversalSZN, even if they’re not from Florida, but ONLY your closest friends and family.

Comment below or share your favorite things about #UniversalSZN using the hashtag on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

And Happy #UniversalSZN!

Of course we tell you that Halloween Horror Nights is amazing. I mean, we are a little biased—we love our annual tribute to terror. The terrifying houses featuring fan-favorite stories. The scare zones you either want to race through in fear or linger in for hours. And the dance monsters known as Academy of Villains.

It’s quite the event, if we do say so ourselves.

But, if you won’t take our word for it, hear what actual Halloween Horror Nights fans have to save. Then maybe you’ll have the courage to face the true fear that comes from within.

Tickets are still available for selects nights, including a new night just added, October 30. Some nights have been selling out, so don’t wait.

Halloween Horror Nights 2018 is full of terrifying scareactors, haunted houses, scare zones and – most importantly – screams. But one thing you might not know about Halloween Horror Nights is that it’s full of hidden Easter eggs!

As you walk through the entire event, you’ll find Easter eggs created by our Entertainment team, who put their hearts and souls – not literally – into every aspect of the event. From homages to past events to secret facts about our team, each haunted house and scare zone has its own little treats (and tricks) hidden inside.

And we wanted to share some of them with you.

  • In the Stranger Things haunted house, the wallpaper and bedsheets in Will Byers’ bedroom are replicas to Netflix’s show
  • The heights of Will and Johnathan Byers are marked on the door frame in the kitchen of the Stranger Things haunted house

Hidden Easter Egg in Stranger Things

  • Good Harvest Daycare in Seeds of Extinction is based on the Good Harvest ‘Orfanage’ haunted house from 2010
  • Ultra-Violent Comics, a comic created for Halloween Horror Nights, line a shelf at the entrance to Seeds of Extinction. Each cover is based on a haunted house or character from past events

Hidden Easter Egg in Seeds of Extinction

  • Filipa Moniz Flowers in Seeds of Extinction is based on the lost ship featured in The Forsaken haunted house from 2011
  • There is a raven in Twisted Tradition representing Edgar Allan Poe, who is Show Director Blake Braswell’s favorite poet
  • The infamous and fan-favorite Halloween Horror Nights bear makes a terrifying appearance in ScaryTales: Deadly Ever After
  • The Carey Drive-In at Slaughter Sinema and the Township of Carey sign in Twisted Tradition are a reference to Manager of Entertainment Lora Sauls’ hometown of Carey, Ohio

Hidden Easter Eggs in Twisted Tradition

  • Show Director Charles Gray is featured in the trailer videos outside of Slaughter Sinema
  • In Carnival Graveyard: Rust in Pieces, there is an original song composed by Charles Gray, Show Director, and Anthony Smith, Audio Designer
  • There is an ice cream cart from Vamp 55, a scare zone from 2016, in Carnival Graveyard: Rust in Pieces

Hidden Easter Egg in Carnival Graveyard

Now, head on over to Halloween Horror Nights 2018 at Universal Studios Florida and start hunting for some Easter eggs. And, make sure to share the Easter eggs you discover using #HHN28 on social media.

Halloween Horror Nights runs now through Nov. 3 on select nights. Click here for tickets to this year’s event.

Taking a Bite Out of “Vamp 85: New Year’s Eve”

Taking a Bite Out of “Vamp 85: New Year’s Eve”

Share this post:

Last year was my thirteenth consecutive year experiencing the world’s premiere Halloween event, Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights. I will never forget the experience last year of turning into a scareactor and being set loose in The Hive haunted house. It was the end of a lifelong dream of participating in the event.

This year, Halloween Horror Nights is bigger than ever, with 10 houses, five scare zones, and another incredible show by Academy of Villains. Naturally, I wanted to try my hand at scaring in a house again, but there was one scare zone that really grabbed my attention…Vamp 85: New Year’s Eve!

I’m a child of the 80s and was always fascinated with the great vampire films of that time. Relive the dark fun of those films AND celebrate New Year’s Eve? Count me in! I had to step out of the haunted houses…and into the streets.

When I heard that I would be receiving the first class makeup treatment, including prosthetics, I was hoping that Eric Garcia—former Face-Off contestant and Universal Orlando makeup artist—would be performing the application. Fortunately, when I arrived on set, he was ready to transform me once again into a vampire, straight out of the 80s!

GIF

I was surprised at how different the approach of scaring on the streets was than scaring in a haunted house. The amazing entertainment folks really took their time explaining to me what to do, what not to do, and how important the guest’s safety and overall experience is. Their attention to detail and concern for the scareactor’s well being is super impressive and was very much appreciated. After the instruction and introduction to those I was working with, it was time to hit the streets!

As I approached the scare zone, the familiar smell of fog filled my nose and the screams of unassuming victims pierced my ears, causing my adrenaline to pump and my excitement to build to epic proportions! I was going to be a scare zone scareactor, and I had never been happier to be walking the streets of Halloween Horror Nights.

GIF

Once I stepped onto the scene, I became that 80s vampire, snarling and showing my fangs to those walking by. I took pride and joy in hiding in the rolling fog, only to jump out seconds later, making guests scream and run for their lives. It was incredible to interact with my fellow vamps, pointing out our next set of victims and commending each other for a scare well done. THIS was the ultimate Halloween Horror Nights experience and I wished it could last forever.

Being a member of The Hive last year was a dream come true, and becoming a scareactor was the ultimate high for a lifelong horror fan. But the freedom of the streets was absolutely liberating! Vamp 85 could be my favorite scare zone of all time, combining all of those elements that kept me hooked on horror as a kid. But being a vampire in Vamp 85 is definitely my favorite Halloween Horror Nights experience of all time!

3. Exclusive Merchandise

This year we introduced a series of collectible buttons that are available only to you, UOAP. Two of the buttons have already come onto the scene – “I Don’t Need a Map” and “I’m dying to visit Carey, Ohio” – but that doesn’t mean you’ve missed out on the collecting fun. Over the next few months, we’ll introduce two additional exclusive buttons – for free – to all UOAP when you visit the Parks.

To make the buttons even more exclusive, there are limited amounts of each, and each is available for a limited time. When you become a UOAP, be sure your email address is up-to-date so you know when the new ones are available.

The buttons aren’t the only exclusive items for UOAP, though. Be sure to pick up a UOAP lanyard to carry your pass and show your UOAP pride, and throughout the year exclusive UOAP merchandise is available for special events, such as Halloween Horror Nights and the holidays.

4. Exclusive Discounts
