Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Food & Wine Classic – one perfect night

Central Florida rolled out its most gorgeous weather of the year thus far for the ninth annual Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Food & Wine Classic. The event was held Friday and Saturday evenings, Oct. 26 and 27, both breezy nights in the mid-70s — a perfect Florida fall weekend. We were invited by the Swan and Dolphin Resort to attend the event on Saturday evening for this review.

Event attendees sampled countless wines from 30 wineries around the world, as well as small plates of deliciously prepared food from more than 40 tasting stations, all of which is served at restaurants and vendors across the two hotels. It’s really a condensed version of the International Food & Wine Festival, going on at the same time over at Epcot.

Lasting just one weekend, single-day tickets for the event started at $119.55 + tax, with add-ons and package prices increasing from there. (They also offered an “A La Carte” ticket booklet with 25 tickets for $50, in case attendees wanted a smaller, more individual sampling.) It’s a really excellent (albeit slightly expensive) date night option for locals — and my husband and I even met a few people who made a longer drive, opting to stay at the Swan or Dolphin to make a full weekend out of it. For example, after a full night of drink sampling, we spent a great hour or so in conversation with a retiree from Sarasota who used to play with The Who. You never know the interesting people you’ll meet if you don’t get the (liquid) courage to strike up a conversation!

Most of the food stations offered different samplings between Friday and Saturday, which made for a nice variety of options if you purchased tickets for both days. For me, there were some clear standouts from Saturday’s offerings. First and foremost, BBQ joint Cib’s Smoke Shop had something amazing called “hand-crafted bacon.” It came on a black slate platter with hay-smoked potato gnocchi, black truffle, Thai chili Brussels sprouts and grape “pudding.” There were so many mild but interesting flavors to balance the richness of the bacon, and I just really loved all the different colors on the plate.

Honorable mention for other delicious plates goes to Shula’s for their beef with mashed potatoes and Bordelaise sauce, Kimonos for their crispy shrimp and yellowfin dragon roll and to the Cabana Bar & Beach Club for the gooey spicy ham and cheese fritters with tomato sofrito and romano crackers. The Pig & Poke also offered some decent tuna poke and traditional earth-baked kalua pork, which I’m assuming came from these guys.

Another personal favorite: Carnival Corner. I ate my funfetti fried Oreo too fast to snap a pic, but this Frito pie with house-made chili was perfect fair fare, along with the Lit’l Smokies with brown sugar BBQ sauce and Cheez-Its.

We ventured back inside briefly — only briefly, because it was just too beautiful outside — and made our way to the Bubbles Lounge. As soon as I walked in, I had to walk back out so I could get video walking into the place. It was so cute! The Prohibition-era sounds of Vintage Vibe echoed through the room as colorful balloons floated overhead, with the words “POP!” and “FIZZ!” reminding guests to partake in champagne and sparkling wine as they made their way through treats like deviled eggs, smoked salmon toast, candied Detroit beet with burrata, and buttered popcorn.

Back outside, and as the sun went down, the entertainment was in full swing. As we were walking through the festival and talking with new friends, we enjoyed Frankie Valli covers from the Atlantic City Boys. But we ended our night with a trip to the front of the stage to watch Epic, a local dance/pop group. It was a great way to end our evening! They did a few of the 2000s “party jams,” like “I Gotta Feeling” by the Black Eyed Peas, but you could tell the whole band really enjoyed their Bruno Mars covers. Bruno’s one of my favs, too, and when I snapped a bit of their performance, I guess it was believable enough that some of my out-of-towner friends sent me messages of jealousy for getting to see him so close!

It was a non-stop night full of entertainment — from the food and drinks, to getting a wine education, chatting up interesting people and dancing to some great tunes. Pricing considered, my husband and I both agreed we’d be attending next year, maybe even splurging for a night at the Swan and Dolphin to save on an Uber or Lyft back home. Safety first! Fun… always.

Wolfgang Puck Bar and Grill at Disney Springs now taking reservations

One of our favorite places to go for a nice meal at Disney Springs used to be Wolfgang Puck Cafe. That location closed to make way for Jaleo, but the iconic Wolfgang Puck brand is sticking around in a newly constructed restaurant located just little bit away where it will open as Wolfgang Puck Bar & Grill. Construction has been moving along and advanced dining reservations are now available on the Walt Disney World website.

We still don’t have an official grand opening date, but guests are able to book a meal starting with lunch at 11AM on December 15, 2018. Dinner service starts at 5pm.

Construction progress as of October 7, 2018 at Wolfgang Puck Bar & Grill in Disney Springs

The new location will serve some of chef Wolfgang Puck’s signature dishes; delivering a taste of California cuisine to central Florida. We look forward to our first taste of the new menu and these classic dishes just in time for the winter holidays.

New Tropical Hideaway at Disneyland reveals what happened to Rosita, she’s its star!

If you ever wondered what happened to Rosita? (And really, what fan of Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room hasn’t) Disneyland finally has an answer for you. She flew the coop for her own perch at the soon to open Tropical Hideaway adjacent to Disneyland’s classic attraction in Adventureland.

The Tropical Hideaway, a new refreshment spot and exotic marketplace, will open later this year and offer unique food and beverages with delicious tastes from all corners of the world. There will also be colorful wildlife, like Rosita.

According to Disney, “After years of performing with the bird mobile chorus of Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, Rosita is spreading her wings and taking flight towards a solo career. You’ll find her on the river’s edge at the loading dock waiting for her boat to arrive.”

A friendly cockatoo, Rosita will great travelers from around the globe as they step inside the Tropical Hideaway. She reportedly has a repertoire of jokes and one-liners that would make any Jungle Cruise Skipper proud.

Are you looking forward to your first visit to The Tropical Hideaway at Disneyland?

Terralina Crafted Italian a welcome addition to Disney Springs

Tucked away in a corner of The Landing area of Disney Springs, sits an Italian lake house where friends and families can come together to enjoy a fine meal, a glass or two of wine, or maybe enjoy the new outdoor bar. We were invited by Terralina Crafted Italian to review the recently opened restaurant and find out how it adds something unique to the many Disney dining options guests enjoy while at Walt Disney World. A portion of the check was picked up by the restaurant, but the opinions here are our own.

Terralina takes over the space formerly occupied by Portobello. The owners felt the spaces inside the old restaurant didn’t really work for more modern day operations or provide the best guest experience. The new layout creates more spaces inside the restaurant and takes better advantage of its location adjacent to the lake in terms of the views if offers. The goal is that you feel like you’re visiting some Italian lakeside estate sharing a meal with friends and it is largely successful.

One of the great new spaces for Terralina is an outside veranda bar area. A great place to stop for a drink and some light eats before a meal or even if you’re just wandering through Disney Springs. The cocktail menu is carefully crafted with drinks that may remind you of Italy, and you will find a knowledgeable bartender who will help you find something to your palate.

We arrived a few minutes early for our reservation and were greeted by friendly staff. In short order we were escorted to a seat in a beautiful glass enclosed patio with a fine view of all the busy lake activity. The tables are set relatively plainly, as you might at home. We were pleased that they tables aren’t set too close together, as is a problem with some other Disney Springs restaurants.

Like most Disney fans, we love to eat. For various reasons we’re on somewhat restricted diets right now. We asked what our options were and the server was able to talk knowledgeably about the menu, she also asked for the chef came out to explain them in more detail to make sure all our questions were answered.

The meal starts with freshly baked bread that you’re encouraged to eat with a small bite of pickled vegetables and Terralina’s own brand of olive oil. We also ordered a starter of Eggplant fries. They came out crispier than I expected and perfectly seasoned. We’d definitely order them again.

The only other ‘on the menu’ item we ordered was the mushroom pizza. With housemade dough and baked in a woodfired oven, this pie was a big hit with our son. The mushrooms included a generous portion of portobello, shiitake, and cremini, with roasted garlic and fresh mozzarella on a white sauce.

I am eating a plant-based vegan diet now, which means no egg in the pasta (usually spaghetti is fine) and obviously no meat-sauce. Terralina’s chefs prepared me a wonderful plate of mixed roasted vegetables in tomato sauce with spaghetti for pasta. It was a very satisfying dish with lots of large veggies, and perfectly cooked pasta. I couldn’t finish it all.

The only failure of the night was a ribeye that was unevenly cooked. Thick on one end and thin on the other, it was perfect on the thick end but overcooked on the thinner side. As this is one of the more expensive items on the menu, we expected more care in its production.

For dessert the manager brought a trio of treats to the table, even though we had only ordered one. It was a nice way to make up for the fact that they messed up one of the entrees. As a vegan, I enjoyed the mango sorbet. Large chunks of sweet mango and a very creamy sorbet was the perfect way to end the evening. The other members of the table enjoyed their famous ‘Beer’-misu and a lemon panna cotta with berry compote.

When we addressed the issue with the ribeye with the manager, they promptly offered to fix the problem and we felt they did great job with the recovery. That’s the sign of a restaurant we’re looking forward to trying again.

James Beard Award winner Tony Mantuano oversaw the transition from Portobello to Terralina Crafted Italian. Day to day operations is overseen by chef Justin Plank, whom central Florida residents might remember from his successful time at Park Plaza Gardens in Winter Park, Fl. They bring a lot of knowledge to the kitchen and it shows in the meal. The new spaces work well whether you want a more intimate dining experience, a seat looking into the chef’s kitchen, or a place for a large group to dine. It’s very flexible. The new menu is an impressive lineup of Italian food you might encounter on a trip to Italy, not to menu a wine list that has something to please everyone.

Lunch and dinner are one credit for Disney resort guests on the Disney Dining Plan or Deluxe Dining Plan. We recommend securing a reservation if you intend to visit for dinner.

Epic Chocolate Art Sculptures at EPCOT Food and Wine Festival

Guests normally visit EPCOT during the Food and Wine Festival for the amazing tastes and sips they can eat and drink, but there’s a room full of amazing food that’s just for looking art – amazing chocolate sculptures created by Disney’s pastry chefs. These brand new sculptures for 2018 represent some of Disney’s most-popular stories from the last year and historically .

The amazing artworks are kept in special temperature controlled display cases. It’s hard to get a clear view through the glass sometimes, but we did our best for those who can’t make it there to see these great chocolate sculptures in person.

Disney asks its talented pastry chef teams to come up with their best ideas for the displays. This year’s displays include:

Wakanda Forever – Michael Craig, Alicia Cherrill – Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

Toy Story Land – Sergia Avila Favela & Team – Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Coco – Noah French, Jason Stricker, Aqueda Vasquez, Cyrstal Saunders, Philip Douglas – Epcot Production Bakery

Polynesian Tiki Totem – Kelly Smith, Maciej Kilimnik – Disney’s Polynesian Resort and Village

An African Leopard Resting in the Savanna – Kristine Farmer – Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa

We missed the team for the Sleepy Hollow display, deepest apologies.

But check out the cool Hidden Mickey they included.

After viewing this collection of sculptures made of chocolate at EPCOT’s Food & Wine Festival, there’s no doubt in my mind that some of the best pastry chefs in the world work at Walt Disney World.

To find these works of art, head to the Festival Center and then make a beeline for back and the Ghirardelli store. Don’t forget to pick up your free square of chocolate. They’re usually handing them out near the front of the store.

Which is your favorite?

Walt Disney World Resort Sweet Treats: October 2018

October is the perfect month to talk about sweets – with Halloween candy and pumpkin snacks galore, there’s plenty of sugar to go around! But outside of the fall offerings around Walt Disney World Resort, our chefs are always hard at work creating more yummy treats for you. So what’s in store this month?

Tink’s Pixie Dusted Cone at Storybook Treats at Magic Kingdom Park

First up is this ADORABLE cone treat at Magic Kingdom Park. Starting on Nov. 1, fly on over to Storybook Treats to take a bite out of Tink’s Pixie-Dusted Cone! All it takes is faith, trust, and a sweet tooth to enjoy this tasty treat made with lime soft-serve and topped with white chocolate “wings,” cotton candy, and just a little bit of Pixie Dust.

Speaking of cotton candy, did you know that there’s now PURPLE WALL COTTON CANDY? That’s right! Served at a cart near the purple wall in Tomorrowland, this mixed berry-flavored cotton candy is tasty AND it’ll be the perfect edible accessory for all of your cute pics!

Space Ranger Slush at The Lunching Pad at Magic Kingdom Park

Starting November 7, we’ve got a couple new tasty slushes coming to Magic Kingdom Park as well. The first will be blasting off to infinity and beyond at The Lunching Pad in Tomorrowland! The Space Ranger Slush has layers of purple grape and green apple slush and comes with a green rock candy straw.

Wonderland Slush at Cheshire Café at Magic Kingdom Park

The Wonderland Slush will also be available starting November 7 at Cheshire Café. This one comes with layers of purple grape and pink raspberry lemonade slush and a pink rock candy straw.

Cheshire Cat Cupcake at Intermission Food Court at Disney’s All-Star Music Resort

Can’t get enough of the Cheshire Cat? Well I have good news! The Cupcake of the Month at Disney’s All-Star Music Resort is a Cheshire Cat Cupcake! This fun vanilla cupcake is filled with pink and purple crispy pearls and topped with strawberry buttercream, chocolate ears, and a chocolate smile. It will appear at Intermission Food Court during the month of November.

Caramel Apple Cupcake at Flame Tree Barbecue at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park

Craving caramel apple? Try out the Caramel Apple Cupcake at Flame Tree Barbecue at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park! It’s a vanilla cupcake with apple pie filling topped with caramel buttercream, a salted caramel drizzle, streusel crumbs, and a house-made apple chip.

Buzz Pop Cocktails at Paddlefish at Disney Springs

Finally, at Disney Springs I’ve got the perfect refreshing treat for a hot Florida day: these Buzz Pop Cocktails available at Paddlefish! Guests 21 and over can try one of the many fruity flavors such as Caribbean Breeze Sorbet, Lemon Drop Martini Sorbet, Blueberry Mania Sorbet, and more.

Are you as excited for these sweet treats as I am? Come on out and taste them for yourselves! For more info and full menus for the locations listed above, visit the Walt Disney World Resort website.

Find your #HappyPlace: Spend Your Day Snacking on the ‘Best Eats’ Around Walt Disney World Resort

We’re on a mission to bring you the “best eats” around Walt Disney World Resort. The hardest part of the mission? Picking a favorite!

You can find the Mac n’ Cheese at Eight Spoon Café at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Embrace your wild side with various toppings from pulled pork to shrimp with sweet chili sauce. Yes, please!

Continue to Magic Kingdom Park for Brats and Tots at The Friar’s Nook. Get your camera (and taste buds) ready for treats like loaded buffalo chicken tots, hot dogs, and everyone’s favorite: fried Twinkies.

Kingla Bakeri Og Kafe at Epcot offers Norwegian specialties like this sweet school bread. Pair it with Viking coffee to round up a day of some of the “best eats” across property!

Next week we’ll continue our quest – with vegetarian options included!
