Nona Social Bar + Kitchen

Nona Social Bar + Kitchen

Nona Social burger

Nona Tap Room is gone and Nona Social Bar + Kitchen has taken its place. Except for the variation of the name, I can’t see a whole lot of difference between the two.

It’s still a neighborhoody place that is more bar than kitchen. Still a bit on the small, cozy side. It still features a menu that is burgercentric. And the kitchen still can’t cook a burger to a medium-rare temperature. Or perhaps just refuses to.

Too bad because the burger I had when I visited recently, the Bacon Bleu, was a good burger than could have been better if it had been cooked properly. The patty was a decent size and had a nice char. It was topped with a smear of blue cheese that was half melted, plus a couple of thick-sliced bacon rashers. The bun was plain but fresh.

The accompanying fries were better than average. I give them a B.

Nona Social Bar

As I said, the bulk of the menu is burgers, though there are also tacos, sandwiches and salads. Nona Social’s website features a photo of what appears to be a salmon entree, but I’ll be darned if I could find one on the menu.

Speaking of photos, if you were to visit the website and Facebook page you’d probably come to the conclusion that Nona Social wants to be known as a breastaurant. I thought we were entering a more enlightened age but apparently not.

Nona Social Bar + Kitchen is at 9145 Narcoossee Road, Orlando. It is open for lunch and dinner daily, including late nights. The phone number is 407-674-7818.

The Edison Burger of the Month – The Croque Burger!

Ooh la la! The September burger of the month from The Edison at Disney Springs is out and it’s a multi-layered delight that finds inspiration from a French Classic. The Croque Burger features The Edison’s signature beef blend of sirloin, short rib, and brisket burger topped with honey mustard, maple cured ham and Swiss on sourdough bread that has been dipped in egg then grilled. It’s like a Monte Cristo for adults.

The Croque Burger comes with a side of handcut fries with spicy ketchup and a skewer of pickles for the crowning glory. Still looking for more? While at The Edison be sure to indulge in their DB ‘Clothesline Candied Bacon’ starter.

The Disney Springs steampunk themed restaurant, The Edison, has become a favorite for burger for visitors and locals alike as their ever-changing burgers are becoming something guests look forward to. When was your most recent visit?

The Hangry Bison

Hangry Bison exterior

Hangry Bison, the new non-Italian restaurant from longtime pizzeria owner Joe Liguori, is doing a lot of things right with its burgers, bourbon and beer, the items that it lists as its specialties under that name.

That name.

Hangry is a portmanteau of the words hungry and angry and represents a condition wherein the need for food without any food foreseeable can cause a precipitous change in mood. It’s a real thing. I myself am among the sufferers. We don’t have a telethon.

But we have Hangry Bison to alleviate the symptoms.

The new restaurant has taken over the space in Winter Park Village that most recently was Firefly Kitchen and Bar (it was Taps before that). Liguori has kept most of the Firefly decor intact, including the Mason jar lights suspended from the ceiling. Lettering on a back wall spelling “Let’s Meat Here” is new as are, I assume, the various cutting boards hanging on the wall.

Hangry Bison burger

Burgers are the forte here, and they’re nicely done. I had the Hangry Bison (I figure it’s always a good sign when a menu item is named after the joint). It featured a big, thick patty fashioned out of ground bison, grilled to a juicy red medium rare and topped with a bit of melting pepper jack cheese and sriracha, both of which gave it a bit of heat, and fresh arugula for a bit of fresh spiciness. Tomatoes, green olives and brown mustard were also included between the pretzel dough bun.

Hangry Bison Doddzilla

My companion chose the Doddzilla burger, which is obviously also a portmanteaunic name but I didn’t ask for explanation. This patty, though just as big and juicy, was made of shortrib meat and had melted cheddar, a slice of ham, onions sauteed in bourbon and bacon jam, plus a fried egg to boot. This was also to have been served on a pretzel bun, but my friend asked to have a brioche bun substituted, which was done cheerily. I’m not sure which burger I liked better, they were both pretty darn good.

Hangry Bison fries

Hangry Bison beans

I do know that I preferred the Sweet Potato Fries that my guest chose as the side dish. They were thick, fried just right and had a nice bit of saltiness. I preferred them to my Bison Beans, which were spicy-hot, as they were intended to be, but a tad too al dente. Plus, who wants to eat healthful veggies with a big fat burger?

Our server had an easy smile and showed good menu knowledge. She also showed enough savvy to give a heads up warning before my Smoked Bison cocktail arrived.

Hangry Bison Cocktail

That was so I could be ready to record the showy presentation. The drink, which featured Basil Hayden Bourbon, bitters, cherries and a torched orange peel, delivered on a platter scattered with burnt cherry wood under a dome filled with smoke. Instantly Instagramable. I liked the smoky notes — actually it was more like a smoky concerto — and I appreciated the large format ice cube.

Hangry Bison sidecar

My friend had the Southern Sidecar with bourbon standing in for the traditional cognac. The bourbon gave it a nice edge.

From the list of appetizers we had the Fried Green Tomatoes, firm and well jacketed, and the Calamari, breaded and fried and tossed with sweet banana peppers.

Besides the many options of preordained burgers, there’s a full section of the menu devoted to those who prefer to build their own burgers. You know, controlling types. Or just the chronically hangry.

Hangry BisonHangry Bison is at 480 N. Orlando Ave., Winter Park. It is open for lunch and dinner daily. The phone number is 407-677-5000.

The Edison — August Burger of the Month

I can’t believe it’s already August. This year has gone by so fast, but that means its time for the third amazing Burger of the Month at The Edison in Disney Springs – the Brat Burger. I guess things aren’t that bad after all.

August marks the start of the fall harvest season, which has me thinking of great German beer and sausage. The Brat Burger features The Edison’s patty includes their delicious signature blend of sirloin, shortrib, brisket, and smoked bacon. It’s topped with juicy links of Unibroue beer-braised bratwurst, sauteģed onions and a spicy spread of mustard 24.

For pairings The Edison recommends the Weinhenstephan Hefeweissbier — a perfectly crafted German wheat beer that really will accompany the Bratwurst, onions and mustard in a true German fashion. Or pair with the Sin-Namon Spiced Apple which delivers flavors of apple and vanilla and a healthy does of sin. Go on, live it up!

About The Edison:

The Edison is a lavish gothic steampunk designed restaurant and bar situated in the heart of Disney Springs’ The Landing district.

Set in an abandoned power plant and with patios facing Lake Buena Vista, the restaurant features classic American cuisine, including Prime Rib, steaks and the incredible The Edison Burger. Signature hand crafted cocktails are served at three bars set throughout the multi-level space. Family-friendly dining and entertainment are offered daily for lunch and dinner but after 10 PM The Edison is transformed into an Adults-only Cabaret. One bar has a stage and a dance floor that fires up the night with a live musicians, flapper-style dancers, aerialists and a DJ to provide an unforgettable experience.
