Disney Ambassador Program Celebrates Rich Legacy with Incoming 2019-2020 Team

For more than 50 years, Disney Ambassadors have served as emissaries of goodwill for the Disney destinations they represent. Walt Disney, himself, created the program in 1965, naming the inaugural Disney Ambassador, Julie Reihm, who helped him by making appearances, giving speeches, escorting dignitaries and more.

Julie’s role set the standard for future decades of the Disney Ambassador program, which has grown to include a whole new world of Disney properties, including six resorts and Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa.

Allow us to introduce the 11 Disney Ambassadors you’ll soon meet at each of our locations, starting on January 1:

Infographic - Global Disney Ambassador Team - 2019-2020

Their immersive training lasts through the end of this year and consists of site tours, global business overviews, media training, and a deep-dive into Disney’s most engaging experiences. They’ll represent our approximately 150,000 cast members, crew members and Imagineers across the globe.

Earlier this week, the incoming class of Disney Ambassadors visited California as part of their training. They were even treated to a little movie magic with a tour of the Studio Lot and a meeting with Bob Chapek, Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Consumer Products.

In keeping with Walt’s vision, the Disney Ambassador program keeps moving forward, which is why their responsibilities cover a colorful spectrum of magic and memory-making both in the parks and beyond.

Please join us as we give a warm welcome to the 2019-2020 Disney Ambassadors!

The Language of Aloha at Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa: Kīhāpai Means Garden

At Aulani Resort, we love to ask you to look at everything twice, and think three times. We do this because we have woven story upon story into everything you see. We love to share with guests and Disney Vacation Club Members stories of Aulani Resort’s artwork, activities, and even our amazing cast, but Iʻll bet you havenʻt considered the cultural importance behind some of our plants.

Waikolohe Valley at Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa

During your visits to Aulani Resort, perhaps you have noticed a small shrub with blueberries in Waikolohe Valley; we call this shrub, ʻukiʻuki. The berries of this small plant can be used to dye kapa, the barkcloth the people of old Hawaiʻi used for clothing and bedding. In fact, you can even take a class at Pau Hana community hall with Dalani Tanahy, a kapa practitioner from the Waiʻanae coast.

Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa

Or maybe youʻve noticed a towering tree with roots jutting out into the air; that’s hala, or pandanus. The long leaves are picked when dry and used for weaving into mats, jewelry, and hats. It is also said that these leaves were used to make sails for great voyaging canoes. The next time you visit Pau Hana community hall, you may meet Aunty Lorna Pacheco, a hala practitioner, who will share with you her unique craft.

Iʻll bet you didnʻt know that our kīhāpai had so much waiting for you to discover! On your next visit to Aulani Resort, be sure to ask our cast members about everything you see.

Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa Awarded Hawaii Tourism Authority’s Highest Honor

It’s been said that language is central to a culture, and that is definitely true for the beautiful Hawaiian language, ‘Olelo Hawaii, that is such an integral part of Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, Hawai‘i.

At Aulani Resort we have been celebrating the Hawaiian culture — with a touch of Disney magic — alongside our guests and Disney Vacation club members, since opening in 2011. Our ‘Olelo Room, where Hawaiian language is the central theme, as is evident in the décor, furniture, and even in the service, continues to be a Guest and local favorite. ‘Olelo is Hawaiian for “word” or “to converse” and even the cast members working in this special place speak fluent Hawaiian! The ‘Olelo Room is a place where guests and locals gather to hear beautiful Hawaiian music played nightly by award-winning musicians, and where Hawaiian-language speakers gather and converse, and for those ready to learn, the décor features wooden carvings of common objects, each labeled with their Hawaiian names.

Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa

It’s this commitment to the language and the culture that led the Hawaii Tourism Authority to award Aulani Resort, alongside Hawaiian Airlines and ‘Aha Punana Leo, with its highest honor — the Tourism Legacy Award. This award, presented at the 2018 Global Tourism Summit, honors organizations and businesses that perpetuate Hawaiian culture, and this year the honorees were identified for helping to normalize Hawaiian language into everyday life.

“We provide a way for kama’aina (Hawaii residents) to show their pride in their home, and a place where Hawaiian-language speakers can pursue and share their passion for ‘Olelo Hawaii,” said Aulani Resort General Manager Kimberly Agas, who recently accepted the award alongside Aulani Cultural Advisor Kahulu De Santos on behalf of the resort. “At Aulani Resort, Hawaiian language proficiency is a valued professional skill, and conversations in ‘Olelo Hawaii are a common daily occurrence.”

It is an honor for our Aulani Resort to be recognized by our community, and by our industry; and it’s even more humbling to be recognized for our efforts in perpetuating the Hawaiian culture.

During your next visit to Aulani Resort, be sure to stop by the ‘Olelo Room and literally surround yourself in Hawaiian language!

Note: In printed materials, Aulani uses the contemporary spelling of Hawaiian words, which includes marks such as the kahako (macron). Because these marks do not often display correctly in electronic formats, including the text of the Disney Parks Blog, we’ve omitted them to ensure clarity.

The Language of Aloha at Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa: ‘Okina Means Glottal Stop

When people visit Hawai‘i, it‘s easy to see things you haven’t seen before. You can hike into a beautiful valley at Mānoa, or swim among the fishes at the coral reef at Hanauma. With so many extraordinary sights to see you might miss the little things that make Hawai‘i, and Hawaiian culture, so beautiful — like the ‘okina, a glottal stop used in written Hawaiian language.

The ‘okina is a letter in the Hawaiian language that looks like an apostrophe but in the shape of a 6, and is used to show where we should break our vowels when we write our words. It’s similar to how we say uh-oh in English, except we use it between all sorts of vowel sounds. It is most commonly seen in our state name, Hawai‘i or in the island we live on – O‘ahu. In fact, the ‘okina can be seen and heard all around the island as you explore street signs, names, and even local radio and television.

‘AMA‘AMA at Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa

Next time you visit Aulani Resort, be sure to practice using the ‘okina! Any of our friendly Cast Members can help you pronounce the names as you visit various areas around the resort, such as ‘AMA‘AMA, our fine dining restaurant by the beach, or Ho‘okani Pila (Instrument Playing) class at Pau Hana Community Hall.

Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa

One of my favorite uses of the ‘okina is the name of one of our newest Disney friends: ‘Olu, a friend of Duffy the Disney Bear. If you saw photos of him recently on the Disney Parks Blog, you may have noticed a small mark next to his name on the upper left hand side. You might have thought it was a splash of water, but I’m here to tell you it’s an ‘okina!

‘Olu, a friend of Duffy the Disney Bear

I invite you to join us at Aulani Resort to learn more about the Hawaiian language.

A hui hou!

Painted Sky: HI Style Studio at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa Opens Today For Magical Makeovers

Need to help your keiki get ready to start an epic adventure, celebrate a milestone, or swim off on their own island journey at the Waikolohe pool? Come visit the newly designed Painted Sky: HI Style Studio, at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, for a magical makeover!

Starting today boys and girls ages 3-12 can choose from a variety of packages, which include hairstyling, makeup, costumes and accessories – all infused with hints of Hawaii and a playful sense of Disney fun. Your keiki can transform into a mermaid, or dress for an adventure across Oʻahu, or even style in the fashion of their favorite wayfinding adventurer Moana of Montunui, who happens to drop by just outside the studio from time to time to say hello. There’s even a touch of Māui here, too, as the winding river rock floor path forms the shape of a hook!

Painted Sky: HI Style Studio is located in the Waiʻanae Tower, just outside of Laniwai Spa. This relaxed-yet-sophisticated luxurious new studio embraces the Hawaiian connection to nature and explores the cultural significance of the rainbows that so frequently grace the Hawaiian skyline. There is even a rainbow inside the studio through a special touch of magic! Rainbows are seen as a blessing from the heavens, and now Painted Sky has its own good-omen constantly gracing the studio.

Reservations are highly recommended, and can be made by visiting disneyaulani.com or calling (808) 674-6300. Listen closely as you enter the studio and you may hear the lovely sound of an ‘ukulele strumming a familiar tune. You may even find yourself humming along—something about a line where the sky meets the sea, maybe?
