First Look: Orlando Forum Rock Dinner Show – International Drive

We were invited to experience Orlando’s newest dinner show, Orlando Forum Rock Dinner Show located at 6362 International Drive, Orlando FL 32819 (near the old Wet n’ Wild) and we absolutely loved everything about it!  They have great entertainment, delicious and fulfilling dinner, friendly staff, and a relaxed & intimate atmosphere.

During our media dinner, we watched Elvis, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Prince, and Katie Perry for a whole hour of popular high energy covers and choreographed dancing that will keep your eye on stage.  They not only looked the part but they also sounded the part, making it really fun to sing along to every song they performed.  The backup singer and backup dancers were all perfection as well.

These Vegas-style nightly dinner shows are available every day of the week starting at 6:30pm.  For the full names of the cast, menu, tickets prices, and more, please visit: orlando-forum.com

Rusty Spoon

Rusty Spoon interior

In the nearly eight years since she opened her restaurant in downtown Orlando, Kathleen Blake has established it as one of the premier restaurants in Florida and herself as one of the area’s most prestigious chefs.

She was recently presented with the Beacon Award by the Foodservice Council for Women; is a leader in the national organization of Women Chefs and Restaurateurs; and has  been nominated four times for a James Beard Foundation as Best Chef South Region. And on Nov. 9, she will be one of the featured chefs at that organization’s annual gala, a $500-a-ticket dinner held at the swanky Pierre Hotel in New York.

And, like so many in the local culinary community, Blake is a generous contributor to area food events for charities, most recently as one of the chefs serving at Cows ’n Cabs (a delicious smoked mullet on fried cracker was her offering).

Still, with all that activity and civic participation, she, along with her husband, William, manages to keep the quality of the food and service at the Rusty Spoon top notch. And if she’s not at a local charity event or Manhattan fund raiser, you’ll find her, usually in her signature bib overalls, cooking in the kitchen of the Rusty Spoon.

Tony Roma

The overalls are a nod to Blake’s farm-to-table manifesto. That term has become an almost trite — and often unprovable — addition to many menus. But Blake was one of the local pioneers of the movement, first as the chef de cuisine at Melissa Kelly’s Primo at the JW Marriott. That’s where she began working with local farmers to source her ingredients, and when she opened Rusty Spoon in 2011, she did so with a dedication to continuing to use local ingredients.

I returned to Rusty Spoon recently to see how things are going. Despite its Church Street location, it has maintained a homey feel. And the food is every bit as creative and expertly crafted as it has always been.

Rusty Spoon board

My companion and I started with the Butcher’s Board, a chef’s whim selection of Scotch Eggs with a grainy mustard, Rillettes, pickled vegetables and Lamb Meatballs. I liked it all but the eggs were a favorite.

Rusty Spoon seafood

For an entree, my friend had the Dirty South, a bouillabaisse-like dish of local grouper, littleneck clams and large, head-still-on shrimp from Port Canaveral on an island of cheese grits surrounded by a moat of shrimp peanut broth. The shrimp and fish were tender and fresh tasting. A couple of crostini served with the dish were perfect for soaking up the flavorful broth.

Rusty Spoon chicken

I chose the Early Fall Chicken Schnitzel, an airline breast sporting a crispy golden crust (perfect for early fall) and topped with sauteed Brussels sprouts, bits of apple and golden raisins. The chicken was juicy and the breading was seasoned just right.

Rusty Spoon pictures

Service was attentive and helpful. The dining area is large yet has a warm tone to it. Walls that aren’t floor to ceiling windows have whimsical up-close photographs of farm animals. There is a wide doorway to the kitchen where Blake and her crew busily work. The bar is a favorite spot for a well crafted cocktail and a bite to eat before or after an event at the Amway Center or Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.

Much will be happening in downtown Orlando in the coming months, including new restaurants. Rusty Spoon has set the standard they should strive to achieve.

Rusty Spoon is at 55 W. Church St., Orlando. It is open for lunch Monday through Friday and dinner daily. The phone number is 407-401-8811.

To celebrate #nationalpulledporkday this year, Sonny’s BBQ is bringing all-new flavors and combinations to the table.  Can you say donuts and tots?  Sonny’s Head Pitmaster Bryan Mroczka crafted three limited-time menu items, and from October 12 to November 4, guests can enjoy the loaded pulled pork tots pictured above as well as:

Wash Down Smokey Bites at The Polite Pig with Whiskey

The Polite Pig recently released private barrels of Elijah Craig Small Batch Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey and Whistle Pig 10 Year Straight Rye Whiskey, along with their latest Cask and Larder brews. We stopped in for a taste of some drinks as well as tasty bites off the menu.

The first words to slip out of your lips when you make your order, besides asking how the staff is doing, is for an Apple Cider Whiskey Sour for only $11 and only here during the Fall Season that many seem to celebrate outside of Florida. It consists of rye whiskey, apple cider, lemon, brown sugar, and cinnamon. I’m more of a gin type of girl, but I could get used to this all year round.

While waiting for our main course that’ll make your jaw drop, we tried the Fall Harvest Pork Belly Taco. Crispy smoked pork belly, squash and cabbage slaw, cranberry gastrique, seasoned pumpkin seeds, and pickled onions. The flavors are subtle, but sweet to the tastebuds.

Not sure what to order? Try the Butcher Board (for 2), which includes pork shoulder, smoked chicken, brisket & bbq cheddar sausage with slaw, house pickles, 2 cornbreads and a choice of 2 market sides. The bbq cheddar sausage is slightly salty from the cheddar, but still tasty. The pork shoulder is moist and the brisket is tender. The smoked chicken is flavorful and moist without being overcooked. Each taste delicious with the sauces The Polite Pig sauce bar offers. My favorite is the peppery sauce.

Add some ribs for $6 to your board. The ribs are fall-off-the-bone and seasoned with a rub created by the chefs of The Polite Pig.

The sides include BBQ Cauliflower. No one is ever interested in cauliflower, not even the name, but these aren’t bad thanks to all the flavors added to make it less like a vegetable.

One of my favorite sides at The Polite Pig are Sweet Potato Tots topped with parmesan cheese.

Want something more creamy than the tots? Try the Mac and Cheese made with aged cheddar and topped with breadcrumbs. It tastes even better as a leftover.

To top off all the dishes, we tried the Buttermilk Cheese Pie. It is thick and sweet. Not my cup of tea, but it’s possibly yours. Give it a go and let me know what you think!

Stop in at The Polite Pig and see what they offer yourself. For more information, visit their website.

First Look: Inside the new Lucky’s Market Winter Park in East Orlando

We were invited to check out the new Lucky’s Market in Winter Park yesterday for their Friends & Family Night before their grand opening tomorrow, Oct. 10.  The store will be kicking off with a Bacon Cutting Ceremony at 8:30am with samples of their smoked-in-house bacon and a check presentation to some of their amazing nonprofit partners.  The address of the Winter Park store is 7580 University Blvd. Winter Park, Florida 32792.

Lucky’s Market – Winter Park has a lot to offer at very affordable prices.  Pineapples can be found for only .77 cents each and Lucky’s Market coconut water is only 4/$5.  What a steal!  I’m beyond excited to become a regular at this new grocery store just two minutes away from home.

Pro-tip: Lucky’s Rewards app is a handy tool to download before you shop.  It will give you a $5 off $25 coupon for downloading it, plus it gives you a $5 coupon for every $100 you spend!

First Look: Saltgrass Steak House in Lake Buena Vista

We were invited to check out the new Saltgrass Steak House in Lake Buena Vista (near the Orlando Vineland Premium Outlets) and we were very impressed with this Texas-based chain restaurant owned by Landry’s Inc.  We had a flawless steak dining experience and the service was second to none.  Our server was very friendly and down to earth, he actually started at the Saltgrass Steak House in Texas so he was very knowledgeable and his recommendations were spot on.  While I was ordering my Silverstar Porterhouse Steak I was about to upgrade it with sautéed mushrooms/onions toppings but our wonderful server stopped me in my tracks and suggested that I get an off the menu topping of crab meat/pepper flakes/scallions/lemon butter and I’m so glad he did because it really took my steak to the next level.

Fun fact: the owner of Landry’s Inc. also owns the Houston Rockets professional basketball team, a team that a few of my friends have played on, so it really doesn’t get any better than that!

Complimentary house bread

The “Range Rattlers” are sooo good and spicy!  I highly recommend these as your appetizers.  Shrimp, jack cheese and cilantro, wrapped in a jumbo jalapeño, then battered and fried and served with a side of ranch dressing.

The Wedge Salad was very satisfying.  The dressing was sweet and the lettuce was deliciously crisp.

My friend ordered the New York Strip with Creamy Peppercorn Sauce (our server’s #1 steak recommendation) with sautéed mushrooms, caramelized onions, herb butter with a side of herb rice.  He enjoyed his meal.

Sweet Potato Fries

Be sure to check out Saltgrass Steak House next time you are in the Lake Buena Vista area!

Oktoberfest at Yard House

We were recently hosted by Yard House for an exclusive tasting of their celebration of Oktoberfest now until Oct 28, 2018. This Oktoberfest, they’re serving a New American twist on some German favorites.

The Jumbo Bavarian Pretzel is a Traditional Bavarian pretzel paired with horseradish mustard and beer cheese sauce. Even the smallest section of the pretzel would make you believe it isn’t soft and chewy; however, you’d be mistaken because each bite of the entire pretzel is soft, chewy and delicious. If I could, I’d eat 10 pretzels a night.

I have found Heaven on Earth and it is disguised as a Double Pork Burger: served with white cheddar, arugula, red onion, tomato, bacon tomato jam, Dijon mustard on a pretzel bun. The pork is juicy, tender and full of flavors.

Another delicious dishes is the Chicken Schnitzel, which is a traditional schnitzel chicken served with a side of ripped potatoes and Brussels sprouts topped with malt vinegar aioli. The chicken is nice and crispy, while the vegetables are seasoned to perfection. They must have heard I love Brussels sprouts because they brought out plenty for me to enjoy. Good news for me is how these Brussels sprouts can be enjoyed year round at Yard House.

Not only the Brussels sprouts are enjoyed year round, but so is the Poke Nachos full of flavor and fresh ingredients on house-made wonton chips.

To finish off, we tasted 3 different desserts in a mini trio sampler. Although they were associated with words like “mini” and “sampler,” there’s nothing small about the portions provided.

The Chocolate Soufflé Cake is like a lava cake that is rich in dark chocolate and topped with vanilla ice cream.

Cheesecake Brûlée comes out looking like flan, but tastes like a delightful cheesecake with crisp sugar like a creme brûlée.

Last, but not least is the Peach Apple Cobbler that was my favorite out of the three desserts we tried. It may be the Southern girl in me, but I can never deny a warm cobbler served with ice cream!

Yard House boasts the world’s largest selection of draft beer, and this Oktoberfest, the restaurant is pouring a number of extra beers.

  • Sam Adams Octoberfest: A blend of rich malts for a hearty, smooth flavor with notes of caramel creating a brew that’s perfect for the season
  • Weihenstephan Festbier: This Festbier produced by the world’s oldest continuously operating brewery has a rich body with a balanced finish and represents the Bavarian way of celebrating
  • Ayinger Oktoberfest: A beer with a deep golden color tinted with amber, lightly sweet with a malty nose balanced with floral hops
  • Paulaner Oktoberfest Wiesn: This German beer has a deep golden color and is full-bodied from Munich and Pilsner malts with a balanced fragrance of hops
  • Goose Island Oktoberfest: A bold American take on the German style, this beer provides a dry, malty body with notes of toffee and burnt sugar

After our tasting, we were able to go upstairs and check out the amazing keg room that overlooks the dining area. How does this look? Amazing, right?

If beer isn’t your fancy, check out some cocktails like this one that changes color when adding some agave to a tequila cocktail.

Oktoberfest at Yard House

American Kitchen Bar & Grill

American Kitchen dining room

Magical Dining Month is over for another year, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any great dining deals out there. Just look at what American Kitchen Bar & Grill is offering.

They’re calling it, maybe just a tad tongue in cheekily, Enchanted Dining Month and offering a $35 three-course prix fixe menu. Sound familiar?

Executive chef Venoy Rogers explained that American Kitchen, which is the signature restaurant at B Resort, missed the cutoff date to sign up for Magical Dining Month. The restaurant didn’t want to run a competing offer at the same time, so instead they decided to run it after MagDinMo was over, so you can now consider the entire month of October to be EnDinMo at American Kitchen.

Rogers invited me to come in and sample the menu choices. I had already known there was good culinary talent at the resort. I had experienced Rogers’ cuisine in the past, and his sous chef Jacob Rios recently won my Sous Chef Challenge cooking competition at the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Show. So I was pretty sure I was going to like what I tasted, and I did.

American Kitchen chix

My lunch companion and I shared the starter course options: Fried Chicken “Oysters” and Firecracker Cape Canaveral Rock Shrimp.

Do you know what a chicken oyster is? It’s a little morsel of meat found in the thigh. They’re sort of like grouper cheeks, except that one’s a fish and the other is fowl and one comes from the mouth and the other from the haunch. So, really nothing like grouper cheeks. But they’re just as morsely and as rare as hen’s teeth. Rogers marinates them in buttermilk and does them up like fried chicken. They’re served with crispy bits of flash-fried kale and accompanied by a slightly spicy aioli.

American Kitchen shrimp

The shrimp were decidedly spicier, hence the firecracker designation, mixed with pepperoncini and tossed with chili-garlic aioli and sprinkled with toasted sesame seeds.

American Kitchen ravioli

The first of the main courses we sampled was the Beet Root Ravioli, house-made pasta (all the pastas are made in house) filled with ricotta cheese (also made in house) with a bit of local goat cheese cream. Very nice.

American Kitchen alfredo

We also sampled the Truffle Chicken Alfredo, with mushroom infused fettuccine and a black truffle Alfredo sauce served with a seared natural chicken breast.

American Kitchen steak

From the regular menu, Rogers served us his version of Steak and Potatoes, featuring a 120-day dry-aged strip with piped mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables, including squash, zucchini and local mushrooms. With a purple flower garnish and the slate-black plate, it was as gorgeous as it was delicious.

American Kitchen dessert

For dessert there was Apple Pie with salted caramel gelato.

American Kitchen bar

Because American Kitchen is located in a hotel, local diners might be a little skeptical about the food. The big red truck that is the focal point of the interior — and is used for setting up food displays at other times — doesn’t do much to generate culinary confidence. But trust me, the food here is first rate. And the Enchanted Dining Month menu is a perfect chance to see for yourself.

American Kitchen Bar & Grill is at the B Resort & Spa, 1905 Hotel Plaza Blvd., Lake Buena Vista. It is open for lunch and dinner daily. The phone number is 407-827-3080.

Football Season brings Football Features to Duffy’s

Duffy’s Sports Grill welcomes you to try their new features this football season as you cheer on your favorite team to win with your family and friends!

Share some loaded nachos with Nachos, Seven Ways to Sunday with housemate corn tortilla chips topped with slow simmered black beans, creamy white queso, pico de gallo, cilantro-onion relish, locally grown jalapeños, sour cream, fresh guacamole, and your choice of protein. The price varies by protein. For us, we picked the seasoned ground beef, which was slightly more salty than I’d like, but this dish is great to share with friends or a party of one.

After a plate of nachos, try the Smokey Brisket Burger Melt which is served with a side of french fries. This dish is tender and filled with flavor. It has to be my favorite of all the football features. However, I do wish it was a bit more moist.

The Lobster Roll is a taste of New England bites made with fresh lobster and it is served cold. Have a taste with some fries or coleslaw.

Maybe you’re not a brisket or lobster person. How about a beef hotdog? Duffy’s Sports Grill offers the Frito Dog, which is a chargrilled, all natural, uncured beef hotdog served with Duffy’s signature chili, cheddar jack cheese, onion, signature sauce, and Fritos. I’m a sucker for hotdogs and this is a different twist. It was definitely a mouthful.

Don’t forget to wash down the delicious bites with some cocktails! Here, we have the Pineapple Martini and Gummy Bear Martini. Both were made well.

For more information, visit a Duffy’s Sports Grill location today!
