Fun Facts About Universal’s Holiday Parade Featuring Macy’s

Fun Facts About Universal’s Holiday Parade Featuring Macy’s

Share this post:

If your perfect idea of a holiday parade includes a light snowfall, twinkling lights, joyful music and the mix of merry and mayhem, then you’re in luck. Universal’s Holiday Parade featuring Macy’s has all of these – and more!

The parade made its debut last year and will return for our resort-wide Holidays celebration running Nov. 17 – Jan. 6. with a theme inspired by cherished childhood memories and brought to life by beloved characters.

As a member of the parade’s operations team, I’ve seen exactly what it takes to pull off this spectacular experience. It’s certainly no small feat, requiring countless Team Members working year-round. I recently rounded up some of my favorite facts:

  • The parade will travel a total of more than 26 miles as it makes its way down the streets of Universal Studios Florida each night.
  • Without a doubt, the highlight of this parade is its 15 intricately hand-crafted floats featuring characters from Despicable Me, Madagascar, Shrek and more. And these floats are big. Really big.
GIF Universal's Holiday Parade featuring Macy's Madagascar
  • Weighing in at about 30,000 pounds and measuring 35 feet long, the float featuring Shrek, Fiona and Dragon rivals the size of two large African elephants. Thanks to Dragon’s 16-foot wingspan, it’s also one of the widest.
GIF Universal's Holiday Parade featuring Macy's Shrek
  • It wouldn’t be a holiday parade without the classic Macy’s star balloons. These stars measure 24 feet wide or as wide as five taxi cars!

  • Piloting floats and balloons of this size takes practice, which is why training starts each summer for a team of nearly 300, including float operators, balloon handlers and parade escorts. (For the best view of all the floats and balloons in this year’s parade, Annual Passholders should watch from the exclusive viewing spot in front of Mel’s Diner!)

  • You’ll see more than 100 dancers and characters during the parade – all dressed to impress in their holiday finest.

  • Last year, more than 220 gallons of snow machine fluid were used to create a special Florida snow flurry during the parade’s finale.

3 Real Life Inspiring Kids Will Melt Your Heart in New Grow Bolder Documentary Series

3 Real Life Inspiring Kids Will Melt Your Heart in New Grow Bolder Documentary Series

We’re not crying… you’re crying!

Share this post:

Earlier in 2018, Universal Parks & Resorts launched the Grow Bolder campaign to encourage kids to take a stand, to be bold and fearless. As the narrator states in the TV spot, “fearless kids aren’t born… they’re made.” We challenge your heart not to melt when reading about these three inspiring kids.

Charlotte, 10, the entrepreneur and philanthropist

Three years ago, Charlotte created ‘Stitches by Charlotte’ where hand sewn dolls are donated to children needing comfort before facing scary medical procedures –something she knows all too well having experienced multiple procedures to repair a cleft palate early in her life.

Watch Charlotte’s inspiring story here:

Robbie, 11, the National Park activist

Last year, Robbie Bond learned that some of his favorite national parks and monuments were being threatened, so he took a bold stand. At 9 years old, Robbie founded a non-profit called Kids Speak for Parks to inspire others to speak up to save America’s parks and monuments for generations to come.

Watch Robbie’s full story:

Hannah, 17, the fearless cyclist

For the first ten years of her life, Hannah Jordan lived in hospitals, sleeping over 20 hours a day as she was living with a glucose deficiency disease, but that doesn’t stop her from achieving her dreams. Watch Hannah’s brave adventure as she’s known as “The Hannibal”, aspiring Olympic cyclist.

Watch Hannah’s full story:

We don’t know about you, but we’re definitely inspired! Tell us about someone you know who is inspiring you to Grow Bolder in the comments below.

Bullet Point Buffet: Openings? A Slew.

Puck rendering

It seems like we spend a lot of time talking about restaurants that have closed, it’s nice to be able to report a slew of openings.

  • Wolfgang Puck Bar & Grill is expected to officially open at Disney Springs Monday. Puck had previously had Wolfgang Puck Cafe when the area was known as Downtown Disney West Side, but that’s another story. It was a good restaurant when it opened in 1997, with an upstairs dining room that was meant to more closely approximate the culinary experience at the celebrity chef’s popular Spago. Then Levy Restaurants bought the Wolfgang Puck brand and took over the restaurant. How much did the restaurant change? Puck once told me that he considered asking Levy to take his name off of it. Puck, I’m told, is in control of the new restaurant, so let’s keep a good thought.
  • F&D Woodfired Italian Kitchen has opened at 2420 Curry Ford Road, taking the place of Peppino’s Organic Italian Kitchen & Pizzeria, which operated in that building a very short time. This is the area that the developers have dubbed the Hourglass District. The city’s Main Streets program would rather you call it Curry Ford West (never mind that it’s on the east side).
Tony Roma
  • Over in the Thornton Park District (that’s TPD on the Main Street’s website), the Menagerie Eatery & Bar is open and, presumably, keeping regular hours, though those hours don’t include Mondays or Tuesdays. It’s from the operators of RusTeak and the Stubborn Mule, just across the way on S. Eola Avenue.
  • In downtown Orlando, in the undistricted area near the Orange County Courthouse, the Ramen has opened. That’s its name: The Ramen. It’s owned by Suichi Tanida, former chef at Mitsukoshi restaurant in the Japan pavilion at Epcot. It’s in the former Philly Connection space at 480 N. Orange Ave.
  • À La Cart has opened in the Milk District and no, Cart is not misspelled. The concept is sort of an open-air food court, with food trucks and carts (not cartes) ringing a green space. Beer and wine are available from a central pavilion.
  • Jumping over to Lake Nona, Park Pizza & Brewing is now serving in the Lake Nona Town Center. This is the third local brand from Orlando based Tavistock Restaurant Group. Even though it is open now, the grand opening isn’t scheduled until January.
  • Ford’s Garage, a Florida chain that started in Ft. Myers in 2012, has opened a location at the Orlando Vineland Premium Outlets. It’s in a freestanding building that sort of looks like a garage. It’s a perfect name for a greasy spoon diner, but burgers and beer are the specialties.
  • La Boucherie, which bills itself as “France’s most popular steakhouse,” has opened a restaurant in Bayhill Plaza at 7625 Turkey Lake Road. It’s in the space that most recently was a Graffiti Junktion and, if I recall, the original location of Memories of India.
  • And because the news can’t all be rosy, Kokino, a tapas restaurant also in Bayhill Plaza, has closed.

Guests can enjoy “Grinchmas Who-liday Spectacular” – a live retelling of Dr. Seuss’s holiday classic starring the mean, green one – and special appearances by the merry Whos from Who-ville throughout Seuss Landing. Guests may also join the Grinch and his friends at Circus McGurkus Cafe Stoo-pendous for a separately ticketed breakfast on select dates (tickets for this festive breakfast are now available).

Mannheim Steamroller at Universal Studios Florida

The best-selling holiday artist of all time, Manheim Steamroller, returns to Universal Studios Florida to fill the air with the sounds of the season. Guests can take in live concerts at the Music Plaza Stage on the following nights: Nov. 17, 18, 24, 25 and Dec. 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16.

Offers to Experience Universal Orlando’s Holidays Celebration

Access to all of the above Holidays festivities is included with admission to the parks or with an Annual Pass, which are now available with up to six months free. Visit www.UniversalOrlando.com/AnnualPass for details about special savings and block-out dates.

Guests can also take advantage of the Florida Resident Holiday Stay & Play Package, which provides even more value for guests staying on-site during the holiday season, with savings on travel from Nov. 17 through Dec. 20. The package not only includes three-night hotel accommodations, but also base admission to all three theme parks at Universal Orlando Resort – including Universal’s Volcano Bay.

New Year’s Eve Celebrations at Universal Orlando

Guests can ring in 2019 with style at Universal Orlando with various New Year’s Eve celebrations that offer something for everyone.

Universal Studios Florida will host its biggest New Year’s Eve celebration yet – complete with rockin’ party zones at the Music Plaza Stage and Central Park areas of the park, live upbeat music, appearances by some of guests’ favorite characters, party favors, confetti and – of course – pyrotechnics.  It’s fun for the entire family and it’s included with theme park admission, or with a Preferred or Premier Annual Pass.

Guests 21 and up can enjoy the ultimate upscale party at EVE at Universal CityWalk, where they get access to six CityWalk clubs with live bands and DJs, unlimited gourmet cuisine, and the chance to dance all night long on Orlando’s largest outdoor dance floor featuring award-winning DJ M-Squared. And once the clock strikes midnight, guests will enjoy a Champagne toast and pyrotechnics display. EVE tickets are on sale now and there is a $30 discount if purchased before Dec. 15. Guests must be 21 and up to attend.

Some of Universal Orlando’s on-site hotels will also join in the New Year’s Eve fun, with entertainment, midnight toasts and more. Highlights include a “ROCK-in!” New Year event at the Hard Rock Hotel, featuring a balloon drop and live countdown from Times Square via satellite, and Jake’s “Best of 2018” Beer Dinner at Loews Royal Pacific Resort.
