2 Years Ago: Starbright Holidays Aerial Drone show at Disney Springs

Do you remember the Starbright Holidays Aerial Drone show at Disney Springs? It was a collaboration between Disney’s Imagineeers and the technicians at IBM. The result was a fleet of small drones filling the sky in an aerial holiday display unlike anything seen before.

We know Disney has patents for use of drone technology as part of its theme park shows and has permission from the FAA to fly them over the parks. The question is when will we see them used in the future?

In the meantime, here’s a look back at the original show from its first night open to the public:

It’s been two years since the show debuted and the technology behind aerial drone shows like Starbright Holidays has advanced significantly. I’d like to see what Disney can do with the latest generation

However, I get that it is not that Disney Springs needs help bringing in customers. The place is packed nearly every night during the holidays. How about as a pre-show to Illuminations: Reflections at Earth at EPCOT during the new Festival of the Arts next year?

Where would you like to see the drone technology used for a show at Walt Disney World?

Previously: 2016 was also the year the Christmas Tree Trail debuted at Disney Springs. Here’s our look at this year’s edition.

New details on Star Wars-themed hotel at Disney’s Hollywood Studios revealed

The first ever Star Wars-themed resort that’s being planned for a lot adjacent to Disney’s Hollywood Studios big Star Wars expansion, promises an immersive experience for guests from their arrival at the space-port to space-view cabins onboard a luxury Starship in orbit above the outer rim planet of Batuu.

Guests will check and begin their multi-day Star Wars adventure with an arrival experience that will simulate a launch into space, orientation with the starship and its cabins, and other information on how to participate in the Star Wars galaxy. High-end dining, role playing, and encounters with other Star Wars characters will occur in common areas, such as a large dining hall and specially designed rooms like the ship’s bridge.

Each group of passengers will have a cabin with its own space port providing a view of space and the planet Batuu down below. When the hotel opens it’s expected to have around 70 ‘cabins’ capable of hosting 400 guests. It looks like there will be two basic cabin types. A regular-sized cabin and a larger first class cabin.

To get to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, passengers will board a shuttle from their starship for transport to the planet Batuu. This ‘shuttle’ is likely a modified van with ‘windows’ that are actually monitors that will show your descent or launch back into space when you return.

The whole experience sounds very labor intensive. Every cast member of the hotel will have to be trained in their story and how to stay in character when interacting with guests. There will also be the normal hotel administration and maintenance staff, more of those, really because they’ll be required to fix show elements as well. Then the hotel will also have multiple shifts of entertainment staff.

My guess is Disney will treat these entertainment contracts like a cruise ship. This way the ‘Starship Captain’ guests interact with on day one at 3pm is the same Captain they see at 8am the next morning at breakfast. There will also have to be some nifty behind the scenes data manipulation so that hotel staff can interact with their guests on a consistent basis. So if a guest pilots the Millennium Falcon when down on the planet to a successful mission, the bartender in the starship will later comment on how that guest successfully smuggled 400 rods of fuel to the rebels and offer them another mission, or something like that.

The totally immersive adventure will keep guests within the ‘magic security envelope’ of the Star Wars galaxy by scanning guests when they check-in to the hotel and them keeping the in the secure perimeter with the themed shuttle directly into Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge inside Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

An experience like this will no doubt be very expensive for any guest who wants to travel to the Star Wars galaxy in a way never before available. What is your prediction for how much a stay in the Star Wars-themed resort will cost per night?

Mickey Mouse Marks Milestone With 90-Character Gathering at Magic Kingdom Park on ABC’s Good Morning America

Earlier today, Mickey Mouse marked his 90th anniversary with a very special gathering in front of Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom Park, which was televised live on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

“Good Morning America” personalities Sam Champion and Ginger Zee joined Mickey on the Castle Forecourt stage, with Mickey debuting his new celebration outfit inside Magic Kingdom Park for the very first time. Ginger then introduced a surprise planned for Mickey Mouse by none other than Minnie Mouse, herself: a special gathering of all their pals at the park.

A whopping total of 90 Disney characters then flooded in through Cinderella Castle to surprise Mickey to the tune of the new song, “It’s a Good Time.” Check out the video above to watch this historic moment.

Mickey and park members in birthday celebration photo

Also joining in on the celebration was Disney super fan Patrice Jenkins, whom “Good Morning America” had selected to accompany Ginger on a whirlwind trip to visit all six Disney theme park resorts around the world. The duo completed their journey arriving at Magic Kingdom Park, crossing the finish line for their epic journey on Main Street, U.S.A., just prior to Mickey’s celebration today.

Patrice, a longtime Disney fan and teacher from Chicago, held back tears as she described what the opportunity meant to her. Check out the video above to hear what Patrice and Ginger both had to say about their Disney travels.

Keep your eye on the Disney Parks Blog for more updates on how you can celebrate Mickey Mouse at Disney Parks in the coming months.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge attraction names released

It’s a day long-awaited by Star Wars and Disney fans everywhere. This morning Bob Chapek, chair of Disney Parks, Experiences and Consumer Products, released the official names of the two main attractions coming to the new Star Wars-themed land at Disneyland and Walt Disney World – Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

On Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run guests will be able to pilot the Millennium Falcon by using over 200 unique control elements where decisions of those in the cockpit of the famous spaceship will have very real impact on whether the mission is a success or failure. Real time advanced decision making computer power will help direct each unique journey based on guest input.

Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run attraction is expected to have a capacity of around 1,800 guests an hour when running a peak efficiency. That’s not bad, but Fastpass+ reservations are definitely recommended for this one.

The other big attraction was revealed to be called Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. Guests will join in an epic battle between the First Order and the Resistance – with a showdown with Kylo Ren himself part of the ride.

So much of Star Wars is wrapped up in the iconic music composed by John Williams and fans will be happy to learn that he’ll be back and composing the themes for Galaxy’s Edge.

Are you ready for your trip to the outer-rim planet of Batuu and the smuggler’s town known as Black Spire? You can visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland in Summer 2019 and at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Fall 2019.

EPCOT’s announces new nighttime show coming in 2020

A new nighttime spectacular will transform Epcot’s World Showcase lagoon beginning in 2020. The exciting update will come as part of the park’s multi-year transformation that will remake the entrance and core sections of Future World.

According to Disney Parks chair Bob Chapek, the new show will celebrate Disney music and how it inspires people from around the world. Expect massive floating set pieces, custom-built LED panels, even more choreographed moved fountains, lights, lasers, and, of course, fireworks.

But wait, you say. Didn’t Walt Disney World already announce the end of Illuminations: Reflections of Earth in the fall of 2019 and its replacement to start immediately thereafter? That’s still true. It’s just that the replacement will be a temporary show while EPCOT completes some upgrades for the big enchilada.

The limited-time experience will be called “Epcot Forever” and will feature classic Epcot soundtracks. Sounds like something fans of the park will really love.

While drones were not mentioned for either show, it’s largely rumored they will be involved in one or both. It’s also not unexpected that Disney will choose a new show that involves Disney music as the current park management isn’t shying away from putting more of its own intellectual property into EPCOT.

We think its good news that you won’t have to head to YouTube for your daily dose of classic EPCOT music anymore at least for a time. What do you think about the two new shows?

New Nighttime Spectaculars & ‘Beauty & The Beast’ Sing-Along Announced for Epcot

Just moments ago at D23’s Destination D: Celebrating Mickey Mouse, Disney Parks, Experiences and Consumer Products Chairman Bob Chapek shared an exciting update on the multiyear transformation of Epcot, including details on new nighttime entertainment planned for the park and additions to World Showcase.

Among the announcements were updates on a new nighttime spectacular planned to open at the park in 2020. This new show will celebrate how Disney music inspires people around the world, and will feature massive floating set pieces, custom-built LED panels, choreographed moving fountains, lights, pyrotechnics and lasers.

But before that new show debuts, there will be a limited-time experience Epcot fans will love, called “Epcot Forever,” which will debut in fall 2019 and will feature classic Epcot tunes. “Epcot Forever” will begin with a spark of imagination that swells into an epic spectacle of fireworks, music, lighting, lasers, and special effects kites.

Bob also announced the name of the “Ratatouille” experience coming to the France pavilion, which will be called Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure. He also shared that a new guest offering will soon debut at the France pavilion at World Showcase (in addition to “Impressions de France”) – a brand new “Beauty and the Beast” sing-along created by Don Hahn, producer of the animated and live-action “Beauty and the Beast” films. And, the Canada pavilion is also in the process of updating the existing O Canada! 360-degree show!

First Look: Disney Skyliner Gondola at Walt Disney World Resort

Earlier this week, we shared the exciting update that our new Disney Skyliner gondola system will be operating at the Walt Disney World Resort in fall of 2019. Today, we’ve got more to share – a first look at one of the actual gondolas!

Disney Parks, Experiences and Consumer Products Chairman Bob Chapek unveiled the gondola to Disney fans during D23’s Destination D: Celebrating Mickey Mouse event. And as you can see, Disney Skyliner will be fun and offer a new way to experience Walt Disney World Resort with amazing views only available from the sky.

Once operating, the gondola system will connect Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Epcot to four resort hotels- Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, Disney’s Pop Century Resort and Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort as well as the proposed 15th Disney Vacation Club property, Disney’s Riviera Resort.

Disney Skyliner

And select gondolas will have iconic Disney characters incorporated into their exterior design to give the appearance that a Disney pal is riding along with guests, such as characters from the ‘Fab Five,’ figures from Disney attractions, fan favorites from movies, and more.

Keep checking the Disney Parks Blog for more exciting details on Disney Skyliner.

Disney World to launch Gondola network in Fall of 2019

Work continues on the Disney Skyliner gondola network at Walt Disney World with the first cables being strung just this week on the Disney’s Hollywood Studios leg. Eventually the system will transport guests between two parks and four resorts and we now have an estimated start date for the aerial tram operation – Fall of 2019.

When it opens guests will be able to ride the state-of-the-art gondola system from Doppelmayr between Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Epcot. It will also connect the EPCOT area resorts with stops at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort and Disney’s Pop Century, Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, as well as the 15th Disney Vacation Club resort, Disney’s Riviera Resort, which occupies space formerly part of the Caribbean Beach Resort.

As we proposed back in 2013, the Disney Skyliner will be an efficient and picturesque way of moving around Walt Disney World. There will be amazing views of the parks and resorts and allow guests to travel together in comfort.

With the last of the support towers now installed and the first series of cables threaded, we’re just about a year away from the first ride on the Disney Skyliner. Will you use the system if given the opportunity?

New Christmas Video from Voctave! A Capella voices from EPCOT

Voctave, which draws many of its members from EPCOT’s beloved “Voices of Liberty” a capella group in the American Pavilion, is out with its first Christmas video of 2018 and it’s a fantastic mashup of two classic songs. For Unto Us A Child A Born and Joy To The World cover the same territory in the story of Christmas and the arrangement by Jamey Ray unite them in perfect harmony. Add the vocal talent of Voctave and you have a new holiday favorite:

If you aren’t in the Christmas spirit after that. I don’t know what to tell you.

This recording is available on iTunes and Amazon as part of Voctave’s album ‘Snow’ if you want to add it to your digital collection.

$20,000 in coins tossed into Walt Disney World wishing wells and fountains go to support foster care teens

The tossing of a coin into a fountain or wishing well is a simple gesture tied to a wish with big results for Central Florida children. Your pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters are periodically collected by Walt Disney World then donated to nonprofit organizations. In 2018, those hopeful wishes added up to a very real $20,000.

For the past two decades, Disney’s guests have made wishes on more than $325,000 in wishing coins. Whether iconic locations like the Cinderella Castle wishing well and the moat of “it’s a small world,” or less traditional locales like the temple queue of Expedition Everest: Legend of the Forbidden Mountain, the coins are regularly collected, cleaned and deposited as part of routine care and maintenance in the theme parks.

Once each year, the coins are donated. For 2018, Community Based Care of Central Florida was the chosen recipient of $20,000 in wishing coins. The organization is the largest supporter of child welfare programs in Central Florida and supports more than 3,000 children each day with services that range from foster care and adoption to mentoring and youth transitional services.

“We are so humbled by the important work that Community Based Care of Central Florida provides to families of all shapes and sizes here in Central Florida,” said Tajiana Ancora-Brown, director of external affairs at Walt Disney World Resort. “These coins represent wishes made by our guests in a magical place, but the funding the coins provide will make a very real impact on our community.”

As part of the coin collection process, Walt Disney World Cast Members were asked to select what Community Based Care of Central Florida program to support with the donation. Thousands of Cast Members cast their votes and selected a youth transitional program to allocate the $20,000 toward. Through the program, Community Based Care of Central Florida is able to provide a safety net of resources for foster care teens transitioning to adulthood.

Through the support of Guests’ wishing coins, the participation of Cast Members, and the efforts of Community Based Care of Central Florida, the dreams of foster care teens are coming true.
